Operation Smile Benefit
Over 7 years ago, my wife and I encountered an unexpected surprise in the delivery room when our baby was determined to have a cleft lip. While this is a common birth defect, and our son was lucky enough to have 2 successful corrective surgeries, we have learned of the adverse impact it can have on children who may not have the means to have it fixed.
More than 200,000 children are born with a severe cleft condition each year — often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can't afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life.
The more we’ve learned, the more impassioned we’ve become. That’s why on January 19, 2017 we are hosting our fifth event in honor of our son with proceeds benefitting Operation Smile. Operation Smile is a children’s medical charity that sends volunteers around the world to provide free corrective surgery on children with facial deformities like cleft lips and cleft palates. As little as $240 helps provide a cleft lip or cleft palate surgery. This surgery can change a child's life forever and can take as few as 45 minutes.
Our son Gavin, now 7 is very proud of all the “smiles” he has helped achieve and is an active participant in our fundraising events. In order to reach our goal this year of $5,000 to donate to Operation Smile, we have planned several fundraising efforts surrounding the January 19th event. Of these, there will be a raffle that features donated gift certificates and products from local businesses.
We hope that you will consider joining us in our efforts to change the lives of children who may otherwise never get the help they need. Any contribution you are willing to make is greatly appreciated.
Thank you and regards,
