Operation Excellence.

Electric Motors are an important part of most operations, and interior components or exposure to contamination all play an important role in overall functionality. Below are some of the most common malfunctions to help you to understand your electric motors.

? Is your motor overheating: Naturally electric motors will heat up during

operation, and this is normal. The fact is when things excessively overheat that

can cause damage or failure to the components that are internally part of the

motor functionality. That is why just like changing the oil in your car to keep

things running at peak performance likewise; maintenance to check regularly

for operation overloads is critical to reduce the risk of premature failure.

? What is a power surge: Probability of failure or malfunction of electric motor

can happen if the amount of energy is exceeded on a electric motor. That is

why it is critical to have options in variable speed drives to mitigate this

damage and provides an extra layer of protection from power surges.

? What to know about Bearings: As one of the most common components of

motor in retrospect like the tires on your car. Without them you would not be

able to get to where you were going. Bearings are the same in a motor. If a

bearing fails it can cause a snowball effect from overheating, inadequate

lubrication, and increased drag. Other things to consider is misalignment, or

excessive load. On the average over 10% of motor failures are due to bearing

failure. Excessive vibration is some of the early signs that you need to have

your motor looked at.

? Why is moisture a factor: For peak performance it is best if you can place

your motor in a place that is warm and dry. This will help to extend the life of

your motors. If you are in a damp or moist environment, make sure you are

using the proper washdown applications and monitoring your equipment

regularly. Moisture can damage internal components of your motor and

shorten the life of the equipment and affect the performance of your operation.

? What are Electrical voltages and currents in a system: As everything needs

to work in harmony, harmonic distortion is a problem when unwanted high

frequency volts disrupt the performance of a motor. What happens is

excess?energy is distributed to the winding and bearings causing energy loss

internally. Over time, this can diminish the insulation of the windings making a

performance breakdown. That is why motors need to have additional equipment

to keep everything in sync. VFD or filters are helpful to keep your equipment in

check and should be considered.

? What are contaminates: Simply stated dirt, dust, or abrasive substances. That

is why it is crucial to monitor your motor maintenance. By doing so and using

lubricants within the machine itself, keep the space around your equipment

clean, and position your electric motors away from machines that could possibly

be factors in air contamination helps. Long term preventative maintenance is key

for staying on top of these motor concerns and disparities. We would be happy

to assist answer any of your questions on how to increase your operations

excellence. We work with superior teams that specialize in all industries and have

the answers you deserve. So, who are you going to call?

Thanks for your consideration, and all the best for operation excellence!
