Is OpenStack unreliable?

Is OpenStack unreliable?

Are you an executive involved in Cloud Security?  Are you a developer involved in Cloud Security?  Please read on...

I had the opportunity to discuss in depth with coders, managers, executives and vendors at Austin OpenStack Summit 2016.

To my surprise, when I asked the question "Is OpenStack reliable", most of them said, "no, it is not reliable, but don't quote me".  Somehow, it looks like a taboo topic.

Various OpenStack component designers Project leaders were even more forthcoming in admitting OpenStack is unreliable for any sizable deployment.  We are hearing how the food tastes right from the chefs.  And I walked away with the sense people I talked to are truthful.

As a coder, project lead of secure cloud software with data science and machine learning, I have been trying to work with OpenStack for the past two years.  My passion is building OpenStack applications.

I am afraid the common perception has more truth than not.  I do taste a bit of stability in the Liberty release, but still it has a long way to go for wide spread deployment.

I am betting on Mitaka release and eagerly looking forward to it.

Ravi - good talk. You had the courage to address the white elephant in the room! I do not use Openstack on a regular basis but I can understand the pain. VMware vSphere also has challenges of it being used in many different configurations (we call them snowflakes). As a company, we are trying to reduce these snowflakes and tuning our stack for various well known use cases. I also heard that a few companies have moved from Openstack to VMware Integrated Openstack (VIO). This move resonates with the issues you address in the talk.

Analogy to Linux makes sense with a difference as people stated in OpenStack Austin Summit: OpenStack has been hyped so much in this digital storm era. People are comparing that to the reality.
