Opensource cloud storage - Intro to Nextcloud
Next article to bring opensource solutions to the masses. I'll start with Nextcloud. Nextcloud is a cloud storage replacement that is completely free and open source. It originates from the creators of Owncloud but has a more open model.
Its basically a replacement for G-drive, One-drive and Dropbox and you can install it on your own servers. This means that you completely control your data. It is also quite security-orientated and conforms to Pci-dss and Hipaa, is built with GDPR in mind and follows alot of ISO 27001 best practices.
There are alot of hosting companies that have this pre-installed and some even offer it for free so there is no need to install it if you want it on an internet facing host. Just follow the link https://nextcloud.com/providers/ and choose one.
You will need a Linux server or VM if you want to install it locally as part of your private cloud behind a firewall or VPN. Just like the other cloud providors, it works in the same way where you install a client on the connecting device and every device you want the data to be synced to or from. T
here are clients for every O.S including the phones and tablets and you can connect external storage like ftp servers and domain controllers.
