Make it Easy to Retrieve, Search, Visualize, and Analyze Your Data: Amazon OpenSearch Service

In today's Amazon Web Services tutorial, we'll look at OpenSearch, a service that makes it simple to obtain, search, gather, display, and analyze data. Amazon's OpenSearch project is a fork of Elasticsearch and Kibana that is based on previous versions of both. You'll have an open-source product that you can use, alter, extend, monetize, and resell in any way you choose using OpenSearch. Simultaneously, you'll be utilizing a safe, high-quality search and analysis tool with a long list of new and creative features.

Let's take a closer look at this fantastic product.

What is Amazon OpenSearch Service?

OpenSearch is a distributed, open-source search and analytics package that may be used for real- time application monitoring, log analysis, and internet search, among other things. With OpenSearch Dashboards, an integrated visualization tool that makes it easy for users to examine their data, OpenSearch provides a highly scalable solution for quick access and reaction to massive amounts of data. The Apache Lucene search library, as well as OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, and Apache Solr, support it. Elasticsearch 7.10.2 and Kibana 7.10.2 were used to create OpenSearch and OpenSearch Dashboards. The Apache License Version 2.0 applies to all software in the OpenSearch project (ALv2).

Amazon OpenSearch Service Features

Deployment and Management; Setup and Configuration: It's simple to get started with Amazon OpenSearch Service. The AWS Management Console or a single API call using the AWS Command Line Interface may be used to set up and configure your Amazon OpenSearch Service cluster (CLI).

In-place upgrades: Using in-place version upgrades, Amazon OpenSearch Service makes it simple to upgrade your OpenSearch and Elasticsearch clusters (up to version 7.10) to newer versions without any downtime.

Event monitoring and alerting: Amazon OpenSearch Service provides built-in event monitoring and alerting. This allows you to monitor the data stored in your cluster and send alerts based on pre-configured thresholds.

Support for multiple query languages: There's no requirement for OpenSearch query domain-specific language (DSL) knowledge with Amazon OpenSearch Service. To explore, find, and query your data, utilize OpenSearch SQL or the OpenSearch Piped Processing Language (PPL), a query language that allows you to employ pipe (|) syntax.

Integration with open source tools: Amazon OpenSearch Service offers built-in OpenSearch Dashboards and Kibana and integrates with Logstash. Use your existing code with direct access to Elasticsearch APIs and plugins such as Kuromoji, Phonetic Analysis, Ingest Processor Attachment, Ingest User Agent Processor, and Mapper Murmur3.

Security: With Amazon OpenSearch Service, you can securely connect your applications to your managed Elasticsearch or OpenSearch environment from your Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) or via the public Internet. You can also extend Kibana with read-only views and secure multi-tenant support.

Storage Tiering;

Ultrawarm: Data that is regularly accessed can be quickly retrieved via hot storage. UltraWarm is a warm storage tier that complements the hot storage layer of Amazon OpenSearch Service by offering less expensive storage for older and less-frequently accessed data while still allowing for interactive querying.

Cold Storage: The lowest storage option for Amazon OpenSearch Service is cold storage. When not in use, detach old or seldom accessible warm data to free up computation and assist save expenses. UltraWarm, which provides dedicated nodes that store data in Amazon S3, is the foundation for cold storage.

Why should I use OpenSearch?

? Application and infrastructure monitoring and debugging: With observability logs, metrics, and traces, you can easily store and analyze data for a complete picture of your system's performance. Set up automated warnings when your system underperforms and track out the source of any difficulties with availability.

? Organize security and event data: For real-time threat identification and incident management, centralize and analyze logs from various apps and systems throughout your network.

? Allow for a smooth, tailored search experience: With a fast, tailored search experience within your applications, websites, and data lake catalogs, you can help people locate relevant data quickly.

FAQ

Can programs running on servers in my own data center access my Amazon OpenSearch Service domains?

A public endpoint allows programs with public Internet access to access Amazon OpenSearch Service domains. You can utilize VPC access if your data center is already linked to Amazon VPC using Direct Connect or SSH tunneling. You'll need to set up IAM policies and security groups in both scenarios.

If I set up VPC access for my Amazon OpenSearch Service domain, how can I access OpenSearch Dashboards and Kibana?

The endpoint for Amazon OpenSearch Service is only available within the customer VPC when VPC access is enabled. You must connect your laptop to the VPC using VPN or VPC Direct Connect to use OpenSearch Dashboards and Kibana from outside the VPC.
