Opening the door to discuss zoning reform in Forest Park Il.

This is article #3 in my 2024 LinkedIn Series:

Included in my Zoning( zoning reform) info Pac, that I have distributed to the local Forest Park powers that be, is a article called,“The Invisible laws that led to America’s housing crisis.” by Nathaniel Meyersohn CNN.

?Here are a few excerpts from that article to highlight:

In the 1910’s, US Cites began enacting policies that would shape neighborhood and, unintentionally, lay the roots for the severe housing shortages today: single family zoning laws.

?

?Single Family zoning laws are unknown to most Americans, but they were instrumental to the expansion of urban areas and the suburban ideal of owning a home with a front porch and a backyard on a half-acre plot of land post-World War II.

?

So a growing number of states and municipalities are loosening zoning laws once considered untouchable. These ““up zone” reforms pushed by proactive housing activist---so called YIMBYs, short for yes in my backyard

?

My last article in this 2024 Series will be called " Forest Park Zoning Reform,Where do we go from here?

"What will be that outcome depends hugely on the ability of the community of Forest Park to have a honest conversation with public debate and then the political will to act on it."

I'm reminded that some parts of this discussion talk about systemic inequality. It exists but is seldom talked about by the general public.

I would take this one step farther past the SFH and say that focusing on residential only areas lead to a scarcity of commercial zones and allowed for land lords in the remaining zones to inflate rent causing your classic mom & pop shops to close. Forest Park is a fascinating mix between wanting to turn the south part of town into a post WW2 car centric suburb while the north side is dense, mix zoned, and still has the unique stores and corner bars of a bygone era.
