Opening Day Message for our team - Putting our HOME values into practice

Opening Day Message for our team - Putting our HOME values into practice

Good Morning everyone……..

As we start another baseball season (and really get into the business of a multi-sport stadium), there are so many thoughts I want to share. Some of this came out in the town hall, but preparation, communication, and plain old “give a shit” is whats going to help us be successful in the season.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned over time in sports (and life) is a quote by John Wooden – “Do not mistake activity for achievement.” In other words, its really easy to be busy but much more challenging to truly accomplish. As the season progresses, this is even more the case as calls, emails, walk ins, notifications, etc can all take your day and keep you from your core job. Manage your key outputs; perform every day towards your goals.

Finally, in putting our values to work, I thought about how each of us can take our values into the busy season. Success is ours to have; but only if we all do the right things every day to get us there. I hope you’ll hold yourselves accountable to all of these, but more importantly hold each other accountable. Lets have a great week and an even better season!

H- Honesty

  • Direct and clear – and if its not, ask for it be made direct and clear
  • Personal – Talk to and with each other – share expectations regularly – ask to verify expectations are being met
  • Find the whole answer, even if that means getting back to someone later
  • Make it easy on fans to talk to us and with us (eliminate barriers)
  • Conflict – Being honest means conflicting when something isn’t clear, or right
  • Being upfront right away - not waiting until something bad happens

O – Opportunity

  • Delight and entertain
  • Find a way to solve the issue
  • Answer the unasked question (what is the real answer to take the best care of the fan)
  • Proactive service – Look for what will make the experience greater
  • To pull tarp – bring a change of clothes – it’s a job for all – quickest way to be become an outcast in a front office is to “be busy” whenever tarp pulls are called

M – Memories

  • Treat each other well – even in conflict, even when its hard – how we’re treated will be what we’re all remembered for long after our time together
  • Take the photo for the fan instead of letting them take a selfie
  • Find a baseball for the bright eyed little kid
  • Get them a new drink when they accidentally spill
  • High five a fan
  • Encourage fans to experience the coolest parts of the stadium (kids zone, Cuervo tent, where players sign autographs)

E – Energy

  • Be present (90% of life is showing up)
  • Smile genuinely – from your eyes
  • Be open (eyes up, phones down)
  • Don’t point to the place, walk them to the place
  • Be excited (and everyone around you will be as well)
  • Know the teams, talk the talk, be the expert

Lets get after – Greater Nevada Field owns Northern Nevada for the next 6 months – embrace and enjoy the challenge and opportunity!
