Opening Day At Home
Today is a day that has always held a special place in my heart and, in the last two years has grown to be a focal point of my year. The start. Today is supposed to be Opening Day at Miller Park and across baseball, but today that day is on hold and Miller Park remains dormant.
I came across a quote recently from songwriter Paul Williams in regards to the current situation that has helped give me some perspective, “It isn’t the end of the world. It’s the most remarkable act of global solidarity we may ever witness.”
I must admit, as much as I’ve appreciated the quote above it isn’t the best one I could imagine hearing today. For me, that would be a Junior Announcer shouting "Play Ball!"…or even better 45,000 Brewers fans having some peanuts and cracker jack, then singing the always boisterous lyrics to Roll out the Barrel.
This will be a year and sports season that will remain in the history books, but in all the unknowns I hope you can replay the words above and find some hope. As aspects of lifestyles are sacrificed and new inconveniences experienced. When today is supposed to be one of the best and loudest days of the year and instead goes quiet, think about the world and find a little bit of solace in how, in the face of the unknowns, it is finding ways to come together…even by staying apart.
The gates will reopen, when they do the crowds in Milwaukee will sing those immortal words that always seem to unite the masses “ZING, BOOM, TARARREL”…because we will have a barrel of fun.
Happy Opening Day…at Home.
