openEO platform: a Federated Open Earth Observation Platform
Over the last two days we had the kick-off meeting for the openEO platform activity. This new ESA funded project builds on-top of the achievements of the H2020 project openEO, where foundational work has been done on connecting different EO cloud backends via APIs to (Python, R, Javascript) client libraries. Now with ESA funding these achievements are transitioning towards an operational platform service capability.
The project is driven by a strong and capable consortium. It includes EODC, VITO and Sinergise - all with existing operational platform assets and in-depth expertise, EURAC in lead for scientific implementation of the use cases and University of Muenster amongs others in lead for outreach. In addition, happy to have EGI on-board as a cloud infrastructure facilitators ensuring optimal linkages with the EOSC. Lastly and surely not least, happy to have endorsement and in-kind contributions by the GEO Secreteriat to enhance linkages within the global EO community!
OpenEO platform will aim to fill the capability gap in Europe and beyond for efficient, intuitive and scalable EO data processing and analytics in the cloud. Key aspects include multiple cloud deployments (initially EODC, TerraScope, CreoDIAS, plus EuroDataCube/SentinelHub for facilitating most of the flexible data access), clean and intuitive APIs that hide underlying complexity and a broad range of analytic functionality to address and solve 9 challenging use cases.
The scope and roadmap of openEO platform is ambitious and we are all enthusiastic about starting the project now. With the intention of building on and federating existing technology components, the first public service offering is foreseen for Q1/2021. Read some more about the details here.
