According to newly revealed emails from OpenAI's early days, co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman expressed serious concerns about Elon Musk's desire for control over artificial general intelligence (AGI), highlighting the tensions that shaped the company's tumultuous beginnings.
AGI Dictatorship Concerns
Newly revealed emails from OpenAI's early days highlight significant concerns among the company’s co-founders about Elon Musk's potential influence over artificial general intelligence (AGI). Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman worried that Musk’s desire for control could lead to a scenario of "unilateral absolute control over the AGI." They feared such control could result in what they referred to as an "AGI dictatorship," drawing parallels to similar concerns about DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis.
To prevent any single individual from gaining absolute control over AGI, the founders emphasized the need for structural safeguards. These early debates underscore the ethical dilemmas and power dynamics at play during OpenAI's formation, as well as Musk's own anxieties about centralized AI power, such as his criticisms of DeepMind. These concerns foreshadow ongoing discussions about AI governance and the concentration of power in the hands of a few tech leaders.
Musk's Control Ambitions
Elon Musk's ambitions in AI have long been controversial. In 2017, co-founder Ilya Sutskever warned that Musk's desire for "absolute control" could lead to an "AGI dictatorship." This fear ultimately pushed Musk to launch his own AI venture, xAI, in 2023, which he claimed aimed to develop "truth-seeking" AI aligned with humanity's values. Critics, however, argue that Musk’s approach—characterized by his push for rapid advancement and looser regulations—could increase, rather than mitigate, the risks associated with powerful AI systems.
CEO Role Disputes
OpenAI’s early development was marked by significant internal conflicts over leadership roles, particularly regarding the CEO position. Sam Altman’s bid for the role faced skepticism from co-founders Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever, who questioned his judgment and motivations. In a 2017 email, they directly asked Altman why he wanted to be CEO, expressing doubts about his decision-making abilities.
These tensions also extended to Elon Musk. Sutskever and Brockman feared that OpenAI's structure could allow Musk to dominate the company if he wished, despite his claims of having no desire to control AGI. The disputes eventually led to Musk’s departure from OpenAI, as negotiations about the company’s direction and leadership reached a breaking point. These struggles reflect the complexities of OpenAI's transition from a non-profit to a for-profit entity and its efforts to balance power among its leadership.
