OpenAI Unveils SearchGPT: Will it be a Game-Changer in AI-Powered Search Technology?

While OpenAI says it is about to take things up a notch with the announcement of its SearchGPT prototype ??, 58% of participants in a recent poll ???on my page are reserving judgement ???? until they are certain about the tool’s accuracy and what it can do.

Open AI describes SearchGPT as a tool ??that will use the strength of AI models to give users fast answers with clear and relevant sources. They say it will allow users to search in a natural, intuitive way, will offer real-time information ?? from relevant sources, and provide visual responses with images and video ??in an easy-to-understand format.

Here is a breakdown of chatter ?? around the Web on this new tool:?

According to PC-tablet the model has ignited a fervent debate regarding the future trajectory of search engines and they think it hints at a potential paradigm shift in user interaction with information retrieval. ??

However, they do state that early assessments have highlighted concerns regarding the accuracy and reliability of its responses, echoing broader apprehensions about the inherent limitations of generative AI in delivering consistently trustworthy results.

“Moreover, the transition towards conversational AI-powered search raises pertinent questions about user experience and sustainability.”

CNet shared in an article that? SearchGPT stands apart from Google in the following ways.

Search results - When you make a query with SearchGPT, you get an answer summary with links to information sources ??. The idea is to save time with more direct responses. When you make that same query with Google, you get an AI Overview, or an AI-generated summary of results, which is a pretty good parallel to what SearchGPT is doing overall. But you also get the People Also Ask feature with four suggested questions and then some links. If the AI Overview answers your question, you're in luck. If not, you'll have to do some scrolling. It's that scrolling that OpenAI hopes to eliminate.

Ads - SearchGPT won't likely have ads, while Google does.

Context – SearchGPT’s results will be a more conversational experience in which SearchGPT retains context to answer follow-up questions.

Hallucinations - Both Google and SearchGPT have had hallucinations, which occur when a chatbot delivers false or misleading information.

Local search and e-commerce ?? - Not all searches are informational. Sometimes we're looking for things to buy or places to go. This is where Google still has an advantage.

The App Developer Magazine shares that a benefit of SearchGPT is that it provides clear attribution and links ?? to the original sources.

“This approach not only helps users discover valuable content but also respects the contributions of publishers and creators.”

They share that the prototype also includes features allowing publishers to manage their presence in SearchGPT, offering them control over how their content is displayed. Importantly, sites can appear in search results without being used for generative AI training, ensuring a clear distinction between search functionalities and training data ??collection. According to them, OpenAI plans to continue refining SearchGPT, focusing on areas such as local information and e-commerce.

OpenAI has shared the prototype with 10 000 users who are currently testing it. To try it yourself, you can sign up for the waitlist here, I’m signed up and as soon as I get my hands on it I will share my thoughts with you guys.?

From my side, I am excited to see how marketers already using ChatGPT will harness the power of Search GPT to revolutionise their approach to research, content creation, and audience engagement.?

What’s your best use of ChatGPT? What prompts work best for you and your work? Would love to hear from you all in the comments below.?
