On Sunday, February 2, OpenAI introduced Deep Research, a groundbreaking tool designed to revolutionize complex research tasks. Integrated directly into ChatGPT, Deep Research autonomously searches the web, analyzes data, and compiles detailed reports in just 5 to 30 minutes—a process that previously took human researchers hours or even days. Whether you’re conducting business analysis, academic research, or market trend forecasting, this tool is designed to make deep research faster, smarter, and more efficient.
?? How It Works
Using Deep Research is simple:
1. Select "Deep Research" in ChatGPT – After choosing your ChatGPT model, you'll see a Deep Research icon (See example screenshots below.)
2. Provide Your Research Prompt – Enter your question or topic as you would in a standard search.
3. Autonomous Research Begins – Deep Research plans and executes a multi-step process, scouring the web and gathering relevant data.
4. Data Analysis & Synthesis – The tool analyzes information from various sources, including text, images, and PDFs.
5. Report Generation – Deep Research delivers a detailed report with citations, similar to what a human research analyst might produce. It takes in 5-30min depending on complexity of the research.
?? Key Features
?? Availability
Currently, Deep Research is exclusive to U.S.-based ChatGPT Pro users, with a monthly limit of 100 queries. OpenAI plans to expand access to other platforms later this month.
?? Real-World Demo
Prompt:
"Analyze how a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, would impact the S&P 500."
?? After submitting the prompt, ChatGPT asked a few clarifying questions before proceeding. Deep Research completed its analysis in just 5 minutes, using insights from 21 sources. Check out the 1min video below for the results Deep Research generated.

Key Insights from the Report:
?? Impact on S&P 500 & VOO – Tariffs will likely slow market growth or trigger modest declines over the next 12 months.
?? Macroeconomic Effects – Examines inflation, interest rates, GDP shifts, and corporate earnings.
?? Historical Comparisons – Analyzes previous tariff impacts on U.S. markets.
?? Investor Sentiment – Highlights key trends in response to trade policy changes.
?? Future Considerations – Key factors to monitor include inflation data, Federal Reserve statements, corporate earnings, and trade negotiations.
(Due to length, full content of the 10-page report aren’t included, but you can generate a similar one by running the prompt yourself!)

While Deep Research is powerful, it’s important to cross-check findings:
?? Who Can Benefit?
By leveraging Deep Research, professionals can streamline research-intensive tasks, saving time and effort while maintaining depth and accuracy.

I recently explored this topic in an article, focusing on optimizing content for better engagement. I was just reading Gary Marcus his response to the release and I learned about the concept of 'Model Collapse' which is a phenomenon where machine learning models gradually degrade due to errors coming from uncurated training on the outputs of another model, including prior versions of itself. I also learned that agentic AI can help to reduce hallucinations by other agents doing fact checking. Wow... things are moving fast ?? But if AI generated content starts to supercede/exceed human generated content, how will this impact our critical thinking capabilities over time? "Because Deep Research lowers the effort, making it trivial to write legit-sounding articles, paper mill factories (there is already such a thing, design to game citation counts) will massively ramp up production, choking the peer review process and saturating the market with hard-to-find, hard-to-rectify errors. When — not if — Deep Research begins to flood the medical zone with shite, we are all in trouble." - Gary Marcus
