OpenAI O1 - Just One More or More Than That?

OpenAI launched a new model, O1, today, accompanied by a strong introduction. The model can tackle far more complex problems and operates at a PhD-level of expertise. This is a notable advancement in the field and should be appreciated.

However, it brings to mind the flashy automation tools or gadgets seen in shopping malls, where the sales guy perform impressive demonstrations. Have seen some spectators are skeptical, others are excited but refrain from purchasing, and a few buy without ever experiencing the promised results.

Interestingly I can draw some parallel with AI world too. There are few clear use cases and they are document parser, summarizer, conversational bot with some bugs ;) and maybe few more. I am not going to deny that the foundation models are able to answer most of the static queries. But the question is more around how much are we able to solve business problems? The listed use cases are enough? or is that what AI can do? What are we truly missing?
