OpenAI Mafia

OpenAI Mafia

In 2015, Elon Musk, alongside Sam Altman and other prominent Silicon Valley leaders, including Peter Thiel, Linkedin co-founder Reid Hoffman and India's former Infosys chief Vishal Sikka among others,

Since its founding,?OpenAI?has grown significantly and has?attracted top talent?in the field of artificial intelligence. It has also formed?strategic partnerships?with companies like?Microsoft,?Shutterstock, and others. The company is also pioneering some of the latest advancements in the field of AI, including the?breakthroughs in transformer models?like?GPT-3.5?and open-source GPU programming language?Triton, alongside?ChatGPT, text-to-image?DALL.E 2, multilingual speech recognition system?Whisper, auto-coding platform Codex (GitHub Copilot) and others.?

Interestingly, it has successfully produced tech entrepreneurs, who are now leading cutting-edge projects across industries. This includes?Anthropic,?Pilot,?Covariant,?Adept,?Living Carbon,?Quill?(acquired by Twitter),?Daedalus, and others. In the last five years, close to 30 employees have left OpenAI to start their own AI ventures – aka?'OpenAI Mafia,'?a large majority of them belong to senior to mid leadership roles.

And some are even in junior roles. In 2021, a former research intern at OpenAI,?Anish Athalye, started?Cleanlab, a data-centric AI platform that automatically finds and fixes errors in ML datasets. Another former research engineer at OpenAI,?Taehoon Kim, recently founded?Symbiote AI, a real-time, 3D avatar generation platform.?

It is fascinating to see new tech entrepreneurs born out of the?OpenAI ecosystem, which is acting as a training ground for future AI leaders. "For a company like ours, the researchers and engineers that create the tech have far more impact than the CEO,"?said?Altman.

OpenAI currently has about 375 employees and published close to 13 research papers last year, followed by nine in 2021. It has also set up a?Startup Fund?to identify talent early on and help them in their journey. A quick look at its work culture shows that OpenAI encourages its employees to take creative risks in pursuit of advancements in AI and emphasis on collaboration, open communication and more.?

The Job Role That Even ChatGPT Can't Touch

In a world where large language models like ChatGPT are becoming increasingly prevalent, it can be easy to imagine a future where AI takes over all our jobs. But fear not; a new role called the 'AI UX Designer' is emerging. Many experts believe this role will become important as the task will be to find novel and efficient ways for humans to interact with deep learning models.

Soumen Ray, head of analytics at Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages, told AIM that UX research is essential for a large language model. However, he believes that it is still in the nascent stage. "Currently, humans are adopting UX, but we should create a system where UX will adopt humans," he added.?Read more here.?

The Hidden Cost of ChatGPT for Indian Languages

The use of tokens when training on large language models like GPT-3 seems expensive for Indian languages. For instance, 'Lokesh Choudhary' in English requires seven tokens, but the same input requires 20 tokens in Hindi because of the mathras and varnas. It also gets even more interesting in other Indian languages, where the tokens required for the same input can go up to 35 (for Kannada) and 34 (for Telugu).?

In short, when we calculated the price of producing an article using the Ada model, the Hindi translation would require nearly 7X of tokens and 7X the pricing compared to the same article produced in English. For Kannada, the pricing is 11X more than in English.?Read the full story here.?Indian Govt Tech Disaster in the Making

In what looks like a technology breakthrough, the Indian government recently launched BharOS, developed by JandK Operations Private Limited, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras-incubated firm. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also tested the OS during the launch event.?

However, this is not the first time an indigenous OS has been launched with much fanfare. In 2013, IndusOS, a mobile operating system for smartphones and tablets developed by Indus OS Private Limited, was launched with much enthusiasm. However, it is now defunct. So now the question is, will BharOS face a similar fate as IndusOS??Read the full story to find out.?
