OpenAI Extends 'Custom Instructions' Capability to All Users, Enabling Enhanced Control over ChatGPT Responses
OpenAI has recently revealed an extension of its "custom instructions" feature, allowing all users, including those on the free service tier, to benefit from it. This feature, initially introduced in July as a beta for paying ChatGPT Plus subscribers, empowers users to exert more influence over ChatGPT's responses. It enables users to incorporate specific preferences and conditions that they want the AI chatbot to take into account when generating replies.
This feature is designed to streamline interactions, eliminating the need for users to repeatedly input the same instruction prompts whenever they engage with the chatbot. For instance, users can instruct ChatGPT to adhere to a certain character limit in its responses or to adopt a particular tone in its replies.
Upon its introduction in July, OpenAI exemplified a scenario in which a teacher employing ChatGPT could avoid the need to consistently specify their teaching grade to receive customized responses aligned with that grade level.
Additionally, developers utilizing this feature can prompt the chatbot to furnish responses in their preferred languages while excluding ones they do not wish to receive.
OpenAI underscored its commitment to accommodating diverse user needs, citing insights gained from interactions with users across 22 countries.
Initially confined to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, a subscription valued at $20 per month, the custom instructions feature has now been extended to both free and Plus users, including those on iOS and Android platforms. Furthermore, this feature can now be employed even with chat history deactivated.
To make use of custom instructions, users can simply click on their profile name and select "Custom instructions" to initiate the feature.
OpenAI has revealed its intention to soon roll out this feature across the European Union and the United Kingdom.
