OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is set to open a new office in Singapore later this year, marking a key step in its expansion across the Asia Pacific region. The Singapore hub will support customers and partners throughout the region and strengthen connections with governments, businesses, and institutions.
During its announcement at Tech Week Singapore, OpenAI highlighted Singapore’s leadership in technology and artificial intelligence (AI), citing the growing demand for advanced AI tools across Asia Pacific. CEO Sam Altman expressed excitement about partnering with Singapore’s government and its “thriving AI ecosystem.”
In addition, OpenAI revealed a new partnership with AI Singapore, contributing up to US$1 million to develop resources such as open datasets aimed at enhancing AI models across Southeast Asia’s diverse languages and cultures.
Dr. Leslie Teo, Senior Director of AI Products at AI Singapore, emphasized that this collaboration will improve the region’s data quality and foster AI adoption. OpenAI will also work closely with Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB) and has appointed Oliver Jay as Managing Director for international operations. OpenAI’s first Developer Day will be held in Singapore on November 21.
