OpenAi = CashGPT?
It has been hard not to hear the letters "AI" everywhere you look recently. Even we endeavored to not do it this week, but then the news drops about a multi BILLION dollar funding round for the reining champ OpenAI, and it's just too huge to ignore.
One would think that the lion's share of the funding will be spent on the gobsmacking amount of computing power that will be needed to expand their experimental R&D efforts, but also just to keep pace with consumer demands and the power necessary to fulfill requests.
Fun fact, according to ChatGPT, the power used to answer my question used the energy equivalent of powering one lightbulb for ~30 minutes. A Google search, ~ 3 minutes. Minting a token on the Polygon blockchain, less than 1 minute. ??
OpenAI has secured a staggering $6.6 billion in new funding, potentially valuing the company at $157 billion, making it one of the most valuable private firms globally. The round saw participation from major players like Microsoft and Nvidia, alongside returning investors such as Thrive Capital. Despite recent executive shake-ups, including the departure of CTO Mira Murati, investor enthusiasm remains high, driven by projections of soaring revenue—from $3.6 billion this year to $11.6 billion next year.?
As OpenAI pivots towards a for-profit model, investors have negotiated protective terms to safeguard their capital. The company continues to push towards its ambitious goal of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), all while enjoying a meteoric rise in popularity since the launch of ChatGPT.
