On July 21st the President of the United States, announced that he was dropping out of this year’s presidential race.
Over the next couple weeks, because of this announcement, something was different. Me, and a lot of other Americans, felt differently.
Our thoughts were different. Our attitudes had changed. Our actions were even different. And this was on all sides of the political divide.
When I thought about it, I realized that while it was a pretty big deal, it was still just one piece of information for me to process about the election.
And yet, that single event changed a lot about the way I thought about the presidential contest.
It was because I had received new information.
In business, we get so attached to our “great business idea†that we sometimes follow it off the cliff.
In life, our personal beliefs get so rigid that we’re blinded by, or forget to look for, alternatives and other ideas.
We close our thinking.? And when we close our thinking a little piece of us starts to disappear because we’re not using it. Just like a muscle that gets smaller when it doesn’t get used.
The playwright George Bernard Shaw said,
Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.?
I now had new information about the election that I could use to formulate new thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs.? I now had new possibilities.?
This happens to everyone. Ever make the wrong turn on a road trip. When you find out, you turn around. ??
So, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it:? It’s easy??
Be open to new information, ideas and opportunities that come your way, sometimes for your betterment. You may not like Mexican food. But maybe you haven’t found the right Mexican restaurant.
Or your business only sells a certain type of software. Maybe the market is shifting and telling you to retrofit your product for better sales.
A closed mind is like a closed fist. You cannot accept anything of value until you open it.
