Open Source and the NHS

Open Source and the NHS

One of our customers in the NHS came out with a great quote when describing why he had chosen our solution at OpusVL when we were doing the post-project interviews.

A lot of money goes into the NHS and needs to be spent well. The NHS is an altruistic body and open source mimics the altruistic nature from an IT perspective

What struck me most was that he had developed his 'philosophy' on how he was going to buy, his must-haves, before he engaged in the market and started evaluating suppliers.

  • He wanted a platform he was not tied to, where he would be locked into the innovation trajectory of a single company.
  • He wanted a UK based company where he could be engaged with the local developers who were understanding of his specific needs.
  • He wanted access to the maximum amount of innovation to improve his business processes and not be tied to a single companies view of the world.
  • Ideally, he only wanted a solution that automated what he needed now and did not see him paying licence fees to international companies that he did not need.
  • He was very keen that the money he was spending was spent on resources that paid taxes locally!

The whole process was an education for me in realising the true power of open source technology to deliver benefits well beyond the specific solution we were creating.

If these factors are of interest in your companies decision making then pleased do get in touch with us at OpusVL and let us articulate how you can support solving your IT problems through the application of Open Source Solutions.
