This is not new, however, it is still very relevant. I have to thank my colleague Scott Stauder, for sharing this. I particularly like the quote that came with it;
“Hadoop distributions are deemed to be obsolete before reaching the Plateau of Productivity because the complexity and questionable usefulness of the entire Hadoop stack is causing many organisations to reconsider its role in their information infrastructure.”
At Teradata we are not interested in selling the whole stack, but instead meeting business needs with best of breed software, platforms and toolsets. Obviously these can include Hadoop, but this is best determined on a case by case basis and not just by a single factor - usually initial cost - as the long term tends to reveal other shortcomings.
A really smart colleague of mine very recently urged his audience not to think in terms of TCO - Total Cost of Ownership - but take the longer and wider view, Total Cost of Outcomes. So when you look at what any technology, or set of them, really delivers back to the business - for example think in terms of cost per query - then you start to get a better idea of the true value of any solution.
