Open Pit Mining
Open pit mining is a technique that involves the removal of topsoil to access the minerals and metals beneath. While this method of extraction can be more expensive than subway mining, it is also safer and faster.
Interested in learning more about open-pit mining and its impact on the environment and the economy?
Open-pit mining is a type of mining in which minerals are extracted from an open pit on the surface of the earth. Instead of digging subway tunnels, miners open large shafts on the surface to access the minerals. Open pit mining is used to extract a wide range of minerals, including copper, gold, iron, aluminum and uranium.
It is a process that begins with the identification and evaluation of an ore body. Geologists conduct field studies and laboratory analysis to determine the composition and quantity of minerals present in the deposit. Once the deposit is identified, an access ramp is constructed to allow access to the mine. A large crater is created on the surface to access the ore. Next, the top layer of dirt and rock covering the ore is removed. This is known as "tailings removal".

The minerals are then extracted with heavy equipment, such as backhoes and large trucks. The ores are transported to a processing plant where they are separated and purified. After extraction, the resulting crater is backfilled with waste material and the ground surface is restored. Reforestation and restoration techniques can be used to recover biodiversity and improve soil quality.
