The Open, oh the Open!

The Open, oh the Open!

What a tournament.

That last round of golf was a spectacle. A rarity in majors recently, but Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson put on what could only be described as a masterclass in golf on Sunday gone.

Despite the best attempts of some of the greatest golfers on the planet, efforts to conquer that back 9 at Troon fell short. And as every player in the field struggled (valiantly it must be noted!) with a ferocious test of skill and tenacity, somehow, two giants of the links steadied themselves and produced spellbinding golf.

It was always going to be a two horse race on Sunday. Andrew "BEEF" Johnston wooed the fans with his cheerful and energetic all round nice guy approach and made a brilliant attempt to close the gap. Zach produced an excellent defense of his title, and Sergio looked great. JB Holmes was unlucky to take 6 on 15, but they were shadowed by what was happening in the last group.

Phil birdies the first, so Stenson birdies 2, 3 and 4, but wait, eagle Mickelson, and so on, until Henrik's class, grit and poetry on the greens took him to victory.

Phil shot a magnificent 65 but it somehow wasn't enough.

We witnessed history as Sweden's Henrik Stenson shot 63 for a total of 20-under-par, the lowest 72-score total in Open history.

Let's hope we see more golf like this at Royal Portrush in 2019. The test of skill on the beautiful Dunluce course along the Antrim coastline will make this another thrilling encounter...
