An Open Letter to Professor Robert Eccles and Leaders of the International Sustainability Standards Board

Dear Professor Eccles and Leaders of the International Sustainability Standards Board,

Given the increased attention on the question of the clarity, accuracy, and appropriateness of the foundational concepts undergirding the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), we at r3.0 would like to extend an invitation to an open, robust, good-faith dialogue on these important issues. We recognize that legitimate perspectives, held by respected experts in our communities, span a wide spectrum; accordingly, we believe such a dialogue will provide a vital service to our field.?

More specifically, questions have arisen whether a standards board with a stated mission to address sustainability, which is a normative and systemic concept, is compatible with incrementalist and non-systemic concepts such as ESG (environment, social, governance) and enterprise value that the ISSB embraces.

Such a dialogue will be most successful if it provides a venue for vetting the robustness of the conceptual claims of a representative cross-section of the sustainability reporting community. We trust that this is a structure that you support as well, so we would welcome collaborating on the details to create a space for respectful dialogue.

We have faith that these issues can be worked through productively, in ways that serve the best interests of our field and society more broadly.

We look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Bill Baue | Senior Director | r3.0

Ralph Thurm | Managing Director | r3.0

I like that concept; pre-competitive dialogue. Let’s make sure we know the rules before we play the game.

The invitation for "good-faith" and "respectful dialogue" is welcome, but I imagine its genuineness is somewhat discredited by so much angry and mocking rhetoric directed toward Bob and his colleagues. There are ways to build support for the very important issues that r3.0 raises without starting a war among well-intentioned people who overall want the same thing, but see different means to the end.

Diego asked about reductionism, and rather than throw a whole lot at you, I'd like to start with only 1 TED talk. Not the final word, to be sure, just food for thought. ;-) https://www.ted.com/talks/donald_hoffman_do_we_see_reality_as_it_is

As we await the response from Professor Eccles and the I?SB leadership on the r3.0?invitation?to dialogue on the core concepts that undergird I?SB, I want to respectfully engage with claims Prof Eccles makes in his "Personal Message to Cantankerous Critics."?Please see here for more on this: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/does-simplification-require-misrepresentation-bill-baue/

Please consider publishing the results and conclusions as a white paper. I would be glad to help if you need assistance.
