An Open Letter to Mothers

Transforming the lives of children in central Ohio by supporting their parents, caregivers, and teachers.

Spring is springing and its transition is upon us. As I look back over these last few months and reflect on where I’ve been I am so thankful that I made it through and so have you. It’s essential to take some time to remember where we’ve been, and what we have overcome, and consider the growth that has happened, great or small. Were you working from home? Ordering take-out? Neglecting self-care? Maybe you were launching a business, trying your hand at homeschooling, or organizing your home for optimal efficiency. Some of us were struggling with our mental health and hoping the sun would come out tomorrow. Whatever your “then” looks like, every milestone should be celebrated, and I am here in my party hat with confetti and noise makers to cheer you on.
Just as we acknowledge and celebrate our children’s accomplishments, we also deserve kudos. When I stop and recall all that I have achieved, I am proud of the strides I’ve made. They are indeed baby steps but progress, nonetheless, toward larger goals I have set for myself. Sometimes all we can do is ease forward slowly -- yet we are moving in the right direction. Those cold fall and winter months didn’t motivate much movement, but now is the time to water and germinate the seeds we planted then and cultivate the fruits of our labor. With the help of the rain and brilliant sun, we are not alone.
The warmer weather is so inviting. It calls to me and inspires me to escape from the warmth of my home, step outside, and turn my face toward the sky. Bare feet planted gently on the cool grass, rejuvenating the nervous system and awakening the senses. As I close my eyes and breathe in fresh air I am inspired to plan and prepare for my next step.
What is your next step? What does your self-care look like? Drinking more water, spending more time in nature, afternoon naps,?more talks and walks with a friend, eating more fruits and vegetables, journaling, deep breathing, gratitude, and grace? What goals do you have in place? What is calling for your attention? Whatever you choose to cultivate and nurture, know that I stand beside you, supporting you as you tend to your blossoms.
