An Open Letter to Life Happens

I've lost a lot of respect for Life Happens over your now-repeated use of the pernicious phrase "use it or lose it" to unfairly compare "traditional" LTC insurance to "hybrid" LTC coverages - both in a recent blog (11/17/2020) as well as the on the nearly-identical LTCI 101 hybrid info page.
Besides being a grossly misleading marketing pitch that is NOT supported by any fair comparative analysis, the use of it by an INSURANCE advocacy organization is irresponsible. "Use it or lose it" is a basic premise of how insurance is supposed to work from a pure risk standpoint.
Have you - Life Happens - ever described disability insurance - in any way - as a "use it or lose it" proposition?! How about term life?! So why is it acceptable for an independent, insurance advocacy group to parrot that unfair and misleading phrase in describing traditional LTC insurance?!
IF "use it or lose it" is a fair way to position traditional LTCI against hybrid coverage, then you should equally describe hybrids as "use it AND lose it" if you need long-term care.
There are tremendous advantages to hybrid LTCI as also presented in the blog & LTCI 101 pages. But traditional LTCI offers the lowest-possible premium for the highest-possible LTC benefits WITHOUT paying extra for a death benefit or cash value accumulation which may not be needed or even affordable.
I would respectfully request you drop any reference to "use it or lose it" and treat traditional LTC insurance the same way you treat term life insurance compared to permanent life insurance.

4 年Bill, you are an influencer. I would like publications and writers to advocate for their clients that they have the conversation to own LTC benefits.

4 年Wonder which carriers are "external resources?"
Hi Bill, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We are taking a look at the language used on our website regarding long-term care insurance. We pass our website copy through several external sources for varying viewpoints before we publish. We’d be happy to chat with you about it as well—if you’d like to talk further, please respond with your email address and we’ll reach out.
