Dear Ms van Huffelen

As you hold the position of general director of GVB, I would like to ask your attention for the following, in the hope that we can address this issue in the near future!

As you will be aware, all of your trams are equipped with swinging exit-gates in front of the sliding doors. Mounted approximately 70 cm off the ground, they present a perfect target for children between 70 and 120 cm tall. If children exit after an adult who is not aware of the fact that these frames swing straight at the smaller person behind them, the frames can cause serious injuries to a child's face or upper body.
This is something which happens within a few seconds and cannot always be foreseen or prevented by parents. It recently happened to my five-year- old, and from talking to other people I have since realized that his case is unfortunately not isolated. There are more parents who experienced the same with their children while commuting on the tram. As you can imagine, I am very interested in changing this situation, for the safety of my children and those of others.

Hopefully you can come up with a solution, so this issue for your many smaller travelers is resolved quickly!

I look forward to hearing from you soon,

Kind regards,
Jennifer Skupin

Yes, my daughter has been injured by these gates as well. She now cowers BETWEEN the gate and the tram door to stay safe. I thought they were safety gates but they have nothing at all to do with safety. They are only to prevent people entering from the other side.

This also happened to my little 4yr old a few months ago! A bit of a shock with some tears and a nice little egg on her head. We don’t use the trams very much but I am now very conscious of these barriers as I know that they can swing back with some force!
