An open letter to fellow creators.

An open letter to fellow creators.

First, let’s get something straight—this letter isn’t just for the artists, musicians, filmmakers, or ad creators. Nope, this is for all of you because we’re all creators somehow. Whether we’re crafting a meal, a home, a relationship, or a business, creation is part of who we are. To all of you deserving of an explanation of why, for a while, I gave up!

For years, I’ve poured myself into my blog, which has grown in reach and maturity.

Early on, I must admit it was a little shallow. I created content just to be seen. Along the way, I met incredible writers (looking at you, David Bruce ), and they helped me discover what good writing could do for my voice. With David’s guidance, I evolved, and when he left, I had no choice but to grow on my own. And grow, I did.

But then, the Algorithm came along. You know the one. It demanded that I “create” on a schedule, turning joy into a chore. And then greed joined the party. Substack dangled the promise of extra cash, and suddenly, writing became about the money, not the joy.

So, I decided to give up. No more chasing algorithms or subscription schedules. From now on, I’m writing only when I feel like it—when it brings me joy. I’m even removing my paid subscription button on Substack. Why? Because I never want the temptation of profit to steal the pleasure of writing again.

It’s up to you whether you like my work or not. For me, the only thing that matters is that I like it. I want to write for the pure joy of creation—the thrill of putting words together for the sake of it. That’s all. Nothing more.

After 40+ years of creating happily and successfully for others (which I’ll continue doing), I declare in ALL CAPS: I CAN TAKE A PAUSE NOW AND THEN DO WHAT I DESIRE. And what I desire is to enjoy every second of creating—for the sheer pleasure of it.

That's your desire to create what matters. When it is genuinely present, you can feel it.

"Scheduling Creativity" is the oxymoron of the day for me! Says so much on so many levels... Wow.

Aww, I love you Ester Rabinovici. You are kind to mention me in that way, but I surely came away from our fun, successful collaborations with at least as many transformative learnings about the art and science of moving hearts and minds in new and better directions. I will stay tuned to hear and see what “moves” you, going forward. Cheers!

Great reminder for us creators. So easy to get off track when it's mixed with business.
