Comparative Crisis Snapshot: Sudan (SDN) 9 months vs. Ukraine (UKR) 23 months

Comparing Humanitarian Response: Inequities Between Sudan 9 months crisis and Ukraine 23 months crisis

Dear Secretary Blinken,

As U.S. citizens deeply concerned about Sudan's humanitarian and political crisis, we seek the U.S. Department of State's immediate action. Our plea is for active involvement in ensuring accountability and the rule of law in Sudan. The entities fueling the Sudan crisis are the Rapid Support Forces (RSF, also known as Janjaweed in Sudan), the National Congress Party (Sudan Muslim Brotherhood), the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) senior leaders, and Prince Mohamed Bin Zayed of the UAE.

The humanitarian and social fabric of Sudan is tearing apart, akin to the visible horrors in Ukraine. The data on casualties, displacements, and human rights violations should alarm and demand urgent action from the international community.

West, Central, and North Sudan are witnessing genocidal acts against Indigenous African and Nubian communities. Perpetrators are undiscriminating, killing, torturing, imprisoning Sudanese males, enslaving and raping women and children, and forcibly displacing indigenous ethnic groups, erasing their 5000 BC presence and heritage from Sudan. The UAE mobilizes Arabic ethnic groups from Chad, Central Africa, and the African Sahel to support their military efforts in Sudan. These nomadic tribes are displacing Sudanese citizens from their villages and homes and settling in them.

The RSF (UAE equivalent to the Russian Wagner Group), funded by Prince Mohamed Bin Zayed, is part of a more significant trend of proxy warfare by the UAE in the African region. The UAE aims to control natural resources and strategically position itself in Africa, leading to widespread destabilization.

In light of these grave injustices, we urge the following actions:

  1. International Criminal Court Involvement: Advocate for the ICC's immediate investigation and prosecution of RSF, SAF leaders, members of the National Congress Party, and implicated UAE officials for crimes against humanity and war crimes.
  2. Call for Immediate Ceasefire and DDR: Commit to Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration of All Factions and Reform of the Sudan Security Sector.
  3. Restore Civil Governance: Transition power back to the former Prime Minister of Sudan, Mr. Abdalla Hamdok, and start an inclusive dialogue.
  4. Mobilize and Equitably Distribute International Humanitarian Aid: Seek funding for Sudan, ensuring equitable and needs-driven distribution.
  5. Establish a rescue fund and a safe haven for Sudanese top intellectuals, safeguard them, and foster an environment conducive to continuing their research.
  6. Asset Freezing and Sanctions: Enforce strict sanctions against the UAE and other entities supporting the conflict, redirecting these funds to aid Sudanese reconstruction and compensate victims and their families.
  7. Diplomatic Efforts for Coordinated Response: Build an international coalition to end the violence and establish a long-term peace process.
  8. Bipartisan Domestic Support: Rally bipartisan support within U.S. legislative bodies for human rights and democratic values.
  9. Reinforcing U.S. Leadership in Global Justice: Promote justice and human dignity, affirming the United States' position as a global leader in human rights.

We hope the U.S. takes a firm stance, reflecting its commitment to international law, human rights, and justice. The world is watching, and the people of Sudan desperately need support.

Respectfully,

Dr. Asaad I. Taha, Ph.D., Senior Advisor, [email protected] Mr. Abdulhalim A. Shigidy, [email protected]
