MY OPEN LETTER TO ALL FRESH UNDERGRADUATES OF SEPT 2019

I used to be like you. Young, Free and Happy. Felt I had all the time in the world. Guess what. I still am happy but not without some lessons learnt the hard way.

 As a freshman, one recurrent idiom usually used by my tutors those days was, "make hay while the sun shines." Mostly when they charged us to make adequate preparations, so we don't fail our exams. This phrase sure rings a bell. Yes?

Oh well...ponder on it as you read it through.

I know most of you at this stage in your life are majorly concerned about making good grades. Bravo!

But here's more to consider equally: Careers and Employability training.

Too early? Not at all.

In case no one ever told you, it's a competitive race out there after graduation. So, "make hay...!"

This is the right time to get equipped, and here are a few things that can help your career and improve your employability:

*Intern in More Than One Organisation During Your Entire Study Years:

Rather than staying home during semester holidays, you can intern in an organisation. Some of you know someone that owns companies, take advantage of that opportunity. You don't have to be paid. Trust me, and money shouldn't be the major thing at this point. Put your focus on gaining experience, building networks, and improving your résumé. Having relevant experience alongside the right qualification gives you an edge over others.

*Take Online Courses:

There are so many great and most free courses online that you can try out. Coursera, Plusacumen, Edx, Yali, Udemy etc. are all free courses you can take advantage of. Remember, the goal is to do the courses that are relevant to the career path you want to pursue. If you are confused on what career path to follow, my next point talks about that. As the name implies, you don't have to be physically present to have the classes making them very cost-effective. Plus, most of these online courses give certifications and are affiliated to reputable universities around the world.
