Recently, I have had feedback from different levels of management on my team that they are struggling with the idea of?“what to share with their staff”. With so much information coming through email, Teams channels, and meeting recaps, along with the fact most employees are remote they are finding it difficult to judge the appropriate level of detail to communicate……here are some tips on what/when to communicate:
- First, read and understand the content of the information you are receiving via email or in meeting notes (definitely don’t just flip an email or meeting notes).
- Ensure the content/subject matter does not appear to be proprietary or something that is sensitive if shared.
- Determine if the content/subject matter is pertinent to your team(if you don’t know ask) See #1 understand the content
- Ask yourself “Even if it doesn’t directly affect my team would they be more informed by knowing this information?”?“Could this information let them see the bigger picture?” “Could this information allow them to be more engaged?”
- If you decide to share, where possible, share the information with some context of the “Why you are sending” and tease out for them “What they need to know”.
- Always ask yourself; “Was this email/meeting/conf call directed to just me or is there something I need to communicate up/sideways or down as a result of this?”
Remember in the virtual world, your team is somewhat blind to the world around them unless you open the curtains for them.
