Open-Cast Mines: Bleeding and Venting of Dirty Pit Water
In German opencast brown coal mining sites, the ground water must be collected in wells and subsequently be disposed of. For this purpose high-performance, submersible motor pumps are used, which lift the water. This water then flows through so-called drainers to the pit water cleaning plants. Most of the drainers are arranged aboveground and constitute a pressure pipe system. To protect the pipelines system, bleeding and venting valves on the high and the low points are installed.
Compared to the past, lightweight plastic pipes nowadays replace sturdy steel pipes and pipes made of concrete or ceramics. Plastic pipes provide cost advantages and the pit water does not corrode them. Of course, also the valves have to be protected against wear and tear. Thanks to its basic material stainless steel 1.4404 (316L), the bleeding/venting valves resist such corrosion without any problems. With the float arranged at the bottom of the valve, the valve mechanism is protected against contamination by the ochre sludge. The design of this valve is compact and shows a low silhouette. This is necessary because it has to remain fully functional during the long frost periods. With a low overall height of the valve, the wind load (moment) is reduced. Plastic pipes are difficult in taking loads and compensating them.
Although plastic pipes have several important advantages, they need to be protected from implosion by means of an effective vacuum protection.
