Open Access Repositories: Playing a role to Empower Global Scholarly Works
Hey Readers,
?We hope you all are well and must be eagerly awaiting the April Newsletter. We are excited to bring you our latest edition. Our representatives from Jaypee Journals were recently privileged to attend The Promise and Practice of Open Science-Asia OA Meeting held in Delhi, India by the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR). It was an amazing event which brought together government policy makers, university officials and researchers as well as stakeholders who are working towards sustainable development goals through open science initiatives across India.
?The conference participants talked about their experiences on how we can promote open science in India and at global platform considering that there are still some challenges facing us all when it comes to implementing these policies effectively at all levels. They also gave insights into what major players within our nation’s scientific community have done so far while trying to advance this noble idea even further than ever before. In this Newsletter, we will be discussing open-access repositories and their role in promoting open science.
Here, you may find an in-depth understanding of Open Access Science, why it is necessary, how long we have reached it, and how far we still need to work.?
Principles and Impact of Open Science
Open Science is a movement with a powerful vision - to make scientific research and data accessible, transparent, and inclusive for everyone. It emphasizes the open sharing of research findings, methodologies, data and tools, using digital technologies and the internet.
Through Open Access, Open Data, Open Source, Open Collaboration, Reproducibility and Replicability, and Open Peer Review, Open Science is transforming the way scientific research is conducted. By embracing these practices, researchers aim to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery, improve the quality and reliability of research outcomes, enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, and increase public trust in science.
?With Open Science, we are breaking down barriers and creating an environment that promotes innovation and collaboration. We are opening scientific knowledge to the world, allowing everyone to access, reuse, and build upon research findings. Through this movement, we are creating a more inclusive, transparent, and trustworthy scientific community - one that is dedicated to advancing knowledge and improving our world.
Open Access Repositories: Playing a role to Empower Global Scholarly Works
Open Access Repositories (OARs) are powerful tools that have the potential to change the world. By providing free and unrestricted access to scholarly works, OARs promote knowledge dissemination and democratize access to information. They offer a diverse range of research outputs across different disciplines, making them valuable resources for academics, students, policymakers, and the general public.
?OARs support the principles of open science by facilitating the sharing of research outputs, facilitating collaboration, and accelerating the pace of discovery. They contribute to the long-term accessibility and preservation of scholarly works, ensuring the integrity of research outputs.
?Open Access Repositories also have a significant impact on the scholarly community, promoting increased visibility, citation, and impact for authors and institutions. They reduce subscription costs for individuals and institutions, making scholarly content more affordable and sustainable in the long run. Additionally, they comply with funding mandates and contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage by archiving and making accessible valuable research outputs for future generations.
Confederation of Open Access Repositories: Building a sustainable, global knowledge commons
COAR is a global association that brings together individuals, libraries, universities, research institutions, and government funders from around the world to create a sustainable and trusted global knowledge commons. COAR's vision is to enhance the visibility and application of research outputs through a global network of open repositories that is built on collaboration, diversity, and inclusivity. By advocating for a distributed, international network of open repositories, supporting repository networks, promoting alignment and interoperability, advancing bibliodiversity, and articulating a strong value proposition, COAR is transforming the system to make it more research-centric, inclusive, and innovative.
COAR supports repositories today and positions them to play a key role in the future.
Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR)
Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR) is a comprehensive and global directory of academic open access repositories. It is a valuable resource for researchers, librarians, and institutions seeking to discover and access openly accessible scholarly content. ROAR provides several key features, including global coverage of repositories from various disciplines and institutions, search functionality that allows users to navigate the database efficiently, and detailed information about each repository, including its name, URL, location, content type, software platform, and policies. Additionally, ROAR offers statistical data and analysis on the growth and usage of open-access repositories, which researchers and policymakers can use to understand trends in scholarly communication. Moreover, ROAR encourages community engagement by encouraging to register their repositories and contribute to the directory, ensuring its accuracy and comprehensiveness. In summary, ROAR is an invaluable tool that plays a crucial role in promoting open access and facilitating the discovery and dissemination of scholarly research on a global scale.
Directory of Open Access Repositories (DOAR)
The Directory of Open Access Repositories (DOAR) is an academic open access repository that is maintained by the University of Nottingham. DOAR provides a carefully selected list of repositories that adhere to certain quality standards and criteria, ensuring that users have access to reliable and high-quality scholarly content. DOAR's quality assurance mechanism evaluates repositories based on criteria, such as content coverage, adherence to open access principles, metadata quality, and sustainability, thus ensuring that users can trust the sources of information they access.
?DOAR's search and browse functionalities facilitate users in discovering repositories by name, subject area, content type, and geographic location. DOAR also provides detailed profiles for each repository, including information about its content, policies, software platform, and contact details, helping users assess the relevance and reliability of the repository. Furthermore, DOAR encourages community feedback and contributions to improve the directory's accuracy and usefulness, promoting collaboration and engagement among repository and users.
?In addition, DOAR offers educational resources and guidelines to improve their repositories' quality, visibility, and impact, supporting the growth and sustainability of the open access movement. Overall, DOAR serves as an necessary resource for researchers, librarians, and institutions seeking to discover, access, and contribute to open access repositories that meet high standards of quality and integrity.
