Ontario's Lost Decade
Good Morning:
With the recent defeat of the Liberal government in the province of Ontario, I feel now would be a good time to reflect on some lessons for the rest of the country from the Ontario experience. In short, the lesson to be learned is that the longer the Liberals were in office, the worse their economic problems became.
For many years, Ontario was the economic engine of our country and led Canada in most economic indicators. But under the provincial Liberals, Ontario has been last or near last in the economic indicators of GDP growth per capita, private sector job growth, new debt per capita, and real median household income growth. With government taxing and spending out of control, Ontario recently became the world's most indebted sub-sovereign government and a have-not province here at home. In a recent study, the Fraser Institute has labelled these results as "Ontario’s Lost Decade".
For all of the details on the Ontario Liberals' economic mess, see the Fraser Institute study:
The people of Ontario may not have noticed the wasteful government policies at first, but their effects did add up over time. Over the past decade, Ontario families have found it more and more difficult to save for their children’s education, to make a down payment on a new home, or just to make ends meet.
The tragedy in the Ontario story is that it did not have to be this way. After first electing the Liberals in 2003, Ontario voters re-elected them three more times before finally throwing them out of office last spring.
What if the Ontario Liberals had only been in power for four years? What if a fiscally responsible, right-of-center party had come to power in that province a decade ago? How much better off would Ontario families be today?
This is the lesson for the rest of Canada: we must hold Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberals to one term in office.
Canada doesn't need massive, out-of-control deficits for the foreseeable future; Canada doesn't need a carbon tax that will make our economy less competitive; Canada doesn't need another lost decade as happened in Ontario.
Any responsible party must be committed to the longevity of our economy. Balanced budgets and debt repayment are what I stand for.
I am asking for your support in becoming your Conservative Party candidate for Regina-Wascana in the next federal election and consequently, your next Member of Parliament.
