Ontario Soccer - Grassroots...
Ontario Soccer Canada Soccer -- My opinion: While it’s great to see Ontario Soccer and Canada Soccer prioritizing grassroots development, the decision to implement 9v9 and a retreat line across all levels may not be the best approach for fostering a truly competitive soccer culture.
Globally, the most successful soccer nations instill a competitive mindset from a young age for those players who aspire to higher levels. By focusing too much on delayed talent identification and de-emphasizing match results, we risk creating an environment that does not adequately prepare young athletes for the realities of elite soccer. Competition drives development—it teaches resilience, decision-making, and the ability to perform under pressure.
Rather than a one-size-fits-all model, we should allow room for both recreational and competitive pathways at younger ages. For those seeking high-performance soccer, small-sided games should focus on intensity, quick decision-making, and goal-oriented play without excessive restrictions like the retreat line. Encouraging competition early will contribute to a stronger national program in the long run.
Let’s ensure we strike the right balance—providing inclusivity and enjoyment while also fostering a competitive edge for those who want to pursue soccer at the highest level.
I'd love to discuss this further...
