Only Your Definition Counts

By now the 2024/2025 National Football League (NFL) season is behind us.? I am a fan, or at least by my definition I am a fan.? Some people have a different definition than I have.? An explanation is in order.
Some believe an NFL fan needs to watch all the games which include all day Sunday (from 9 AM to 9 PM), Monday night (three to four hours), Thursday night (three to four hours), and the Super Bowl.? I am a fan of the Buffalo Bills.? I started following them in 1971 while going to school in Rochester, New York.? Lynne and I have been loyal fans especially in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s when the Buffalo Bills went to four Super Bowls in a row.? The Bills lost all four Super Bowls, a feat that has yet to be repeated.? We participated in Super Bowl parties complete with the embarrassment and angst that came from defeat.? This past season I chose a different path.? I stopped watching all NFL games.? Here is why.
First, I was investing on some Sundays 12 hours sitting to watch millionaires play a game, the same game that they played in grammar school, high school, and for most in college.? Second, to stay awake I spent those 12 hours eating.? Third, I found myself, while watching the Bills, suffering the angst of the ups and downs of the competition. Fourth, a true fan purchases all the steaming services so that you can watch your team no matter where they play their games away from their home stadium.? ?I now spend those hours entertaining myself with other personal interests.
To remain a fan, after the games are over, I choose to watch game highlights.? Time invested is 10 to 15 minutes per game.? I can now watch multiple games of interest on my schedule with less time invested.
We have many roles in life, fan, friend, husband, father, sister, brother, wife, etc.? Society in most cases has a definition on what it takes for the norm of each.? One of my favorite examples is parent.
I had the best of all worlds.? My mother was a stay at home mom.? After she married my dad her job was to raise her three children.? Dad worked in his bakery six days per week with most Sundays as his day of rest.? My dad partnered with his brother in their bakery business.? My uncle’s wife, Millie, raised three children and worked in the bakery.? All four of these people were awesome parents, yet each family had a different definition for the role of the mother and wife.? Different definitions applies to everything we do.? As this pertains to attracting the right prospects and generating more referrals, it is especially true as to how you define these roles.
For those of you who have worked through INTEGRITY’s system you know that messaging, most importantly your Defining Statement and key words, provide your business definition.? Most will remember that your first assignment was to provide me with 50 answers to the question, “What do you do?” ?My point is that the message defining your business is only yours, unique to you.
It would be much easier to create generic messaging.? Going to the Internet and copying someone else’s message, crafting it to be a little different, is how some companies create content.? Following the methods taught at INTEGRITY Networking Solutions, the point being, “Only your definition counts.”
I will continue to be a loyal supporter of the Buffalo Bills.? Next year I might choose to spend three hours watching Bills games.? Maybe they will one day go to the Super Bowl and win.? I will always remember that it is my choice, how I define being a fan.
