These are the ONLY two points that matter.

These are the ONLY two points that matter.

The Moment.

And the Vision.

Those are the only two points to focus on. One in the distance, and one right in front of you. Forget the space in between. The middle doesn't matter. The story always unfolds differently than you expected. The path always turns out tougher than you planned. The cuts and curves have a mind of their own... So you can't get attached to the steps or the scenery along the way. They will change and rearrange and disappear.

Your first job may not be in the industry you initially imagined. Your big assignment may not be work that you love. You might have to take a lower salary to get your foot in a side door. Your favorite boss may leave and your trusted colleague may stab you in the back. The promotion they promised you may never come.

And with each one of those instances, you will have to act and react quickly, recentering yourself on the moment - "what will I do right now?" - and your bigger vision - "what do I want to create for myself and the world."

Most of the time, all those mistakes, missteps, missed chances, and even the miserable heartbreaks don't affect your broader vision. They just reveal an unexpected route on your Path. Things like titles, and promotions and pay scales are all pieces of that path - they are ornaments. Your vision is much, much bigger. It's about the impact you want to leave on the world and the legacy you want to create. It works hand-in-hand with your purpose.

My purpose is to help people live their passion. And my vision is to build a global platform that inspires and enables people to do just that.

I believe I am building that with #besomebody. But I have learned to not get attached to all the points and pitfalls along the way. In just 3 years, I have moved out of (i.e. lost) two offices, lost 12 employees, had my original CTO quit out of the blue, had investors short me hundreds of thousands of dollars, had our company truck stolen and rented RV robbed. I had to move from my hometown in Austin to Boston, and live in my van for a few months in between. I had an article written about me calling me "an amazing Austinite" and then a few days later, a "spoof" video ridiculing me, my TEDx talk, and my company. (It actually was pretty damn funny lol. I deserved a lot of it, and boy did I learn a lot).

Of course there have been some unexpected successes along the way too. We've raised $2M in Seed Funding, we've got a top rated app in the App Store, our movement is reaching 9 million people as of this week, and we are working on an entirely new vocational training "Path" that will launch early next year. The stories behind each of our investors and each of our employees are crazy. Movie-worthy stuff that I can't wait to share down the road. But none have come 'as planned.' And we've had to let go of more than we ever could have imagined. Staying in the moment and staying true to the vision is the only way we - I - have been able to keep going.

It's made us much stronger, much more adaptable, and much more powerful. We shake things off quickly, and get right back to work.

So don't worry about the shape of your journey. And don't get too emotional about the places you must pass through, the people who may leave you, and the things you may leave behind.

Just focus on right now, and what you'll create.

#besomebody.
