The Only Thing Constant Is Change

The Only Thing Constant Is Change

I have just heard of the passing of Queen Elizabeth, and all I could think of is with all the changes that have gone on in my life in the last fifty-plus years; she has always been a constant.

Over her lifetime she has appointed fifteen Prime Ministers, was the first royal to grow up in the era of television, was a full-time member of the armed forces, was the head of 54 Commonwealth Nations, and is supposedly the most traveled monarch in history.

But what is most fascinating about her was her ability to provide a sense of stability in an ever-changing world.

No matter what was happening in the world, there she was. The hat and the outfit would change, but not the brand.

Queen Elizabeth II, whether you liked her, or did not, always showed up as herself.

She made the monarchy what it is today and laid the foundation for what the monarchy will become.

Every organization needs to learn lessons from these seventy years of brand management. Keeping one eye on the present, with the other on the future without forgetting the past.

Creating stories enabling people to see where you have been, where you are, where you are going and how they belong on that journey with you.

The lesson that lies ahead, and one we should all be watching, is that of transition. How does Charles pick up where Elizabeth left off or does he? Does he bury the past with his mother and send the monarchy in a new direction, does he cling to the past and the safety of tradition, or does he create a new hybrid model?

Each of us has that option in a time of transition. The question is, do we do it purposely and strategically, or do we allow other people to form their opinions and drive our actions?

Change is in the wind, it will be curious to see which way it blows and what lessons we can all learn from it.

Long live the King.

She was true to herself, her country, and her brand. It does feel weird knowing we now have a King.

Yes I can ???? Ben Baker??? And as John C. Maxwell tells us: “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” Once again, we get to choose. It is a sad day. Thinking of you my friend.
