"The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be". The inspirational story of Emma and Elle that will keep you motivated
Looking to turn your passion into a career ? Here is a story of two George Brown College alumni Emma Lauermeier and Elle M. that will inspire you .
Emma works at MLSE as the Digital Content Coordinator - Music & Live Events (Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Partnership). She covers all live events for social media at Scotiabank Arena and Coca-Cola Coliseum, creating content such as making reels or capturing photos for platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Emma previously worked as a Community Manager at Publicis Canada. In 2020, she graduated from George Brown College's Digital Media Marketing programme.
Elle Marie is a Digital Content Director with a focus on the arts and culture. She is a marketing and branding expert who also provides in-house photography and videography services. Her Post-Graduation Certification from George Brown College helped her understand the industry, but working in the field and gaining practical experience gave her the most exposure. Elle is an inspiration to me because, despite all of her health challenges, she turned her passion for capturing art into a career and never gave up.
Emma and Elle share valuable insights from their individual experiences that I believe will be useful in my career journey.
The first thing I learned from Emma is that even if you get a job in a field that isn't completely aligned with what you want to do, don't be discouraged because there is always room for learning in every work experience you get.?Any kind of experience you gain, whether in retail or a restaurant, helps you develop skills that will help you in your future jobs.
The second thing I learned from Emma is Do not let rejection deter you from applying for jobs; it is a necessary part of the process. Continue to apply for jobs; one day, someone will take notice. Prepare a toolbox for rejection. Be flexible while applying for jobs in different industries .
The third thing I learned from Elle is that nothing is predestined. The obstacles of your past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings. Any challenges you face in life, you will definitely grow out stronger with time.

The last thing that I learned from Elle is the importance of authenticity. She emphasised that her most successful clients and projects are founded on honesty and candour, and that audiences want to trust the brands with which they work. This helped me understand the value of being true to the organization I work with and to the businesses I want to help.
As a result of the advice and lessons learned from the speakers, I will begin:
Things that I will stop doing :
To set myself up for success in the future, I will be more flexible to trying new opportunities and roles so that I can find my true passion. I will also be more patient with rejections and not get discouraged in this process. More importantly, be more authentic and network as much as possible .As Emma said, I will keep learning and exploring even after obtaining a job of my dreams because learning never stops.
In terms of networking,I learnt from Emma that Networking is very important to make a way in a company for future job opportunities, so never lose a chance in doing that.Set up a meeting with people who are currently working in the roles that you are passionate about and understand their roles. Developing relationships and trust with others requires authenticity, as I learned from Elle. I'll bear these things in mind as I network and build connections in my industry.
