Only Outcomes Matter

Only Outcomes Matter

In the realm of professional development and achievement, there exists a crucial distinction between mere actions and the desired outcomes. Too often, individuals fall into the trap of equating action with accomplishment, believing that the completion of tasks inherently leads to success. However, true success lies not merely in the execution of actions, but rather in the attainment of desired outcomes.

Consider the common scenario: "I sent the email" or "I made the call." While these actions represent steps taken towards a goal, they do not guarantee the desired outcome. The email may go unread, the call unanswered. Thus, it becomes evident that focusing solely on actions can lead to a sense of false productivity and missed opportunities for true achievement.

I have always given the example of a ball being dropped from one end of the tube and you waiting for the ball to arrive out from the other end. It does not and you say, "Oh but I dropped it. It MUST come out of the other end."

Outcome focused means, it becomes your job to unblock the tube for the ball to show up from the other end.

To excel in any professional endeavor, it is imperative to cultivate an outcome-focused mindset. This involves shifting one's perspective from the mere completion of tasks to the actual realization of desired results. Here are some steps to help develop this mindset:

  1. Clarify Your Objectives: Begin by clearly defining your desired outcomes. What specific results do you hope to achieve? Establishing clear objectives provides a roadmap for your actions and ensures that you remain focused on the end goal. Let us take an example that we want 50 attendees for the webinar we are planning.
  2. Align Actions with Outcomes: Once you have identified your desired outcomes, evaluate your actions to ensure they are aligned with these objectives. Ask yourself: How does this task contribute to the realization of my goals? Adjust your actions accordingly to maximize their impact on the desired outcomes. Keep adjusting till the desired outcome is achieved. You sent out mailers but registrations are not happening. You send out reminders. No movement. This is where Outcome focus changes behavior. You need to make calls to people requesting attendance. You need to remind an hour prior and perhaps 15 mins prior.
  3. Monitor Progress: Continuously monitor your progress towards achieving your desired outcomes. Regularly assess the effectiveness of your actions and make any necessary adjustments to stay on course. Remember, success is not a linear path, and flexibility is key to overcoming obstacles and adapting to changing circumstances. Here you need to get 100 confirmations for 50 to show up hopefully.
  4. Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and celebrate the achievement of milestones along the way to your desired outcomes. Recognizing your progress not only boosts morale but also reinforces your commitment to pursuing your goals with diligence and determination. It also gives message to the others that outcome focus is what is important. Celebrate when you get 15 registrations. Celebrate 25 and so on. Tell others that 25 of your friends signed up in 30 minutes, what are you waiting for.

The usual behavior is what I have outlined in point 1. "We sent out so many mails and so many reminders but no one turns up. Poor little us." :-) Your job is to get the outcomes!!!

By embracing an outcome-focused mindset, professionals can transcend the mere completion of tasks and unlock their true potential for success. Remember, it is not enough to simply take action; true fulfillment comes from achieving the outcomes that matter most. So, let us commit to being sharply focused on outcomes and strive towards excellence in all our endeavors.

Lovely article KG, Kisko #PadiHai ? This rant has been chanted by Guru’s since decades now. Nothing new here. Yet, since the Flintstones era, this seems to be a very cool way to argue at an appraisal discussion. I deliberately refer to appraisal discussion because Managers seem to be very busy doing very strategic things all year around. Their bosses are also equally to be blamed. Aren’t they ? They are busy doing even more strategic stuff. Don’t ask what ? In my recent weekly article, I had written about the fate of some large population of Inside Sales folks who often argue about the fact that they were able to get X number of meetings without even peeping into whether any of those translated to conversions into Opportunities over the next few days/weeks or even months. Kisko #PadiHai ? Your article resonated very well in that intersection. Brilliantly written, as always. Not only the younger generation but everyone is sure to benefit from your reflections for sure.
