There is only now...
Bob Cummins
Helping people who influence, improve performance through the application of behavioural science.
For most of my life, I didn’t really have a grasp of what was ‘now’.
My wandering mind would play tricks on me.
I believed that everything existed, both past and present. Not in a time traveling way as such but as a projection of situation and experience.
I would ruminate about what might come to be, mostly causing worry but quite often just restricting my present self to a destined path.
I’m assuming I wasn’t always that way, but I can’t remember being different.
It took me until very recently to understand that my past conditioning imprisons me and restricts who I believe I can be.
Conditioning, the accumulation of past experiences, does indeed give me my perception of this reality and of what I believe I can do.
It also limits my imagination and ideas, imposing those limits on the scope of my future self.
Understanding this can be liberating. If my past affects who I am today, and how I see the world.
What I do today becomes my past and will affect how I see tomorrow.
If today is a repeat of yesterday, with nothing new, I will for the most, remain the same.
However, if I purposefully expose myself to new experiences, I will create a new past that will inform my new present.
Nothing exists other than now.
