How to order a beer in Prague

Did you know that the Czech Republic drinks the most beer per capita of any country? If that doesn’t show you how serious they are about their beer I don’t know what will! Beer is central to Czech life and history. That is why before you even think about your night out in Prague, you must know how to order a beer. Here is our step-by-step guide.

1. Find any pub

This shouldn’t be too difficult, they are everywhere! Prague has the second-highest density of bars in the world. The typical pub will have around 3 beers on tap, 10°, 12°, and dark beer, if you are looking for a certain brand of beer look for a sign outside. Once you have entered you can take your seat and wait for the waiter to come and take your order or go to the bar.

2. How to ask for a beer

Say, “Pivo prosím” (pee-vo pro-seem) meaning “beer, please” and show with your fingers how many you would like. Use your thumb for one, index finger for two, and so on. You can stop the order here and the waiter will assume that you mean a large 10° lager (pint of 4.5%). If you are asked to be more specific or if you would like a different beer, there are other phrases you may need, such as:

  • “Velke” (vel-keh) meaning “Large” (this is the usual size of beer)
  • “Malé” (mah-leh) meaning “Small” (a small beer is around half a pint)
  • “Tmave” (tuh-mah-veh) meaning “dark beer”
  • “Dvanáctku” (duh-vah-naht-skoo) meaning “12°” (this is around 5%)
  • “Desítku” (dess-eet-koo) meaning “10°” (this is around 4.5%)

3. How to drink a Czech beer

When your beer arrives, there may be a large head on it. This is because the foam is as important as the beer and acts as a protective layer between your drink and the rest of the world. The foam keeps your beer fresh and is a reflection of the quality of the beer itself. A thick and creamy head means an excellently made and served beer. Some beer connoisseurs even order a “mlíko” (meaning milk) which is a beer that is pure foam.

You should cheers with everyone you are sat with and then tap the table all while making eye contact. You can also say, Na Zdravi (nah z-drah-vee) meaning “to your health”.

4. How to ask for another beer

Previously in Prague, when there were only a few centimetres left of your beer the waiter would come and bring you a new one. However, this is not common practice anymore so if you would like another beer simply say, “je?tě jedno” (yesht-ye yed-no) for “one more”.

5. Getting the bill

When you are ready to move on and pay you can say, “zaplatím prosím” (zah-plaht-eem pro-seem), meaning “I will pay now please”. The waiter keeps track of how much beer has been drunk so they will give you your bill.

The average price of a pint of beer is 35 CZK (around £1.15) however, the prices of beer can go up to 100 CZK (around £3.30) in really touristy areas just to give you a good idea of what your bill will be.

6. Paying as a group

If you are in a group, you may be asked if you want to pay, “dohromady nebo zvlá???” (doh-roh-mad-ee nay-bow zev-lasht) meaning “together or separately”. If you want to pay together, say “dohromady” (doe-hromar-dee), and if you want to pay separately say “zvlá?” (zvlaasht).

7. Don’t forget to tip!

Rounding the bill up to the next 10 CZK or 20 CZK is seen as satisfactory. Make sure you hand the tip to your waiter as Czech people do not leave tips on the table.

The view from Letná Park

The Czechs love beer gardens almost as much as the British. They are great to sit in on a sunny day and often have great views. Day drinking is also not frowned upon in Czechia. Most people will have a beer with their lunch and it isn’t strange to see people drinking at all times of the day. If you are planning a big night out in Prague and want to get a few beers in during the day while you are exploring then here are some of the best places you can go.

U Flek?

U Flek? is a 520-year-old brewery and restaurant. The building is absolutely gorgeous and huge with 8 halls, a garden and enough seating for 1200 people. Their beer recipe has stayed unchanged since 1499 (if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!) making it a great place to go if you want a real authentic, medieval beer experience. U Flek? is mostly aimed at tourists and groups so the prices are a little more expensive but the atmosphere and the beer make up for it.

Where to find them:

Brewery and restaurant U Flek?

K?emencova 11

Prague 1

Top tip: The staff at U Flek? are traditional so they will try and give you a new beer when yours is almost empty. If you are finished then you may need to be quite firm in stating that you do not want any more.

Letná Beer Garden

Fancy drinking a delicious cold beer under the shade of chestnut trees with the sun coming down through the leaves while you are looking out over the stunning Old Town? Of course you do! At Letná Beer Gardens you can drink a lovely refreshing beer while taking in some of the best views in Prague. Unlike other bars, they serve a wide variety of beers as well as snacks. The garden is located in the Letenské Sady park so your surroundings are lovely. Letná Beer Gardens has hundreds of tables and is popular with tourists and locals.

Where to find them:

In Letenské park so for the entrance to the beer gardens take trams 12, 8, 25, 26, 1, 2, 14 to Letenské náměstí.

Strahov Monastic Beer Garden

Strahov Monastic Brewery is a place full of history and good beer. It is part of the world-famous Strahov Monastery (which is worth a visit in itself) where you can view the huge Strahov library! The building itself dates back to around 1142 AD and people have been brewing beer here for around 600 years.

Strahov Monastic Brewery and Restaurant is situated in Petrin Park about 20 minutes walk away from Prague Castle. If you are lucky enough to get a table outside then you can experience beautiful views over Prague while sampling their home-brewed beer and eating some traditional Czech food.

Manifesto Market is a trendy, food and drink village nestled between Prague’s main bus station and train station. It is made up of industrial containers all offering delicious food and drinks. Almost every single container sells some form of alcohol so there is plenty on offer.

Manifesto Market also has live DJs and houses an outdoor cinema. There is a really relaxed and cool atmosphere to this place making it a great place to hang out with friends. We would recommend checking out Poke Haus, who serves Hawaiian poke bowls as well as ramen all with Hollywood-inspired names such as, “Salmon L Jackon”. You can also find traditional Czech food here plus Argentinian street food, Indian, Mexican, Thai, and many more.

Many beer tastings also give you the chance to sample some traditional Czech snacks. Check out availability for beer tasting in Prague here.

Bars and pubs to pre-drink before your night out in Prague

So you have finished your day of exploring the city, you’ve had a few drinks along the way but now it is time for some serious drinking in preparation for your night out. Here are some of the best places to go for delicious and fun drinking experiences.

Pub Crawl

If you fancy a stress-free evening before your night out in Prague and would rather someone else organise your pre-drinks then perhaps you should consider going on a pub crawl. These often include free unlimited drinks at your first pub, a free welcome shot at every venue on the way, and free entry to one of the best clubs in Prague at the end of the night. Check availability for pub crawls in Prague here.

Lokal Dlouhááá

Lokal Dlouhááá is where traditional meets modern day. It is one of the longest pub/restaurants in Prague but we would recommend booking in advance, especially in the evening, as it is almost always full! They have expert bartenders who have extensive knowledge of beer and the best ways to pour it. Their chefs create classic Czech dishes using fresh ingredients so this is a great place to come for an evening meal just before you move on to a bar.

Where to find them:

Dlouhá 33

Absintherie

When you think of Czech alcohol, your first thought may be of beer and your second may be absinthe or “the green fairy”. Absinthe was originally used to treat people with malaria and other diseases but it boomed in popularity in the 19th century. It was drunk by many artists, writers, and other creatives (such as Edgar Allen Poe, Pablo Picasso, Oscar Wilde, and Vincent Van Gogh) who wanted to experience the supposed hallucinations that it caused. However, these hallucinations are now thought to be widely exaggerated. Absinthe is banned in many countries including the USA but in Czechia, Bohemian-style absinthe is popular. Most absinthe available is between 60-70% and will often be served to you with a sugar cube (which is melted over your drink to make it taste better).

If you want to learn more about Absinthe or you just fancy giving it a try then be sure to check out Absintherie which is both a bar and a museum. They have around 100 different types of absinthe on offer and bartenders with extensive knowledge of this fascinating drink.

The PUB

The PUB is one of the best places for drinking in Prague, due to the fact that each table has its very own beer tap, for self-serve beer! The atmosphere here is great, not because of the self-service but there are screens that depict the amount of beer drunk at each table, adding a bit of healthy competition to the mix.

The PUB has 5 locations all-around Prague, you can find them here:

  • Hálkova 6, Praha 2
  • Veleslavínova 3, Praha 1
  • Nádra?ní 7, Praha 5

The Glass bar

The Glass Bar is situated at the top of the Dancing House (a famous building designed by Frank Gehry and Vlado Miluni?). It has gorgeous views over Prague and serves all different types of drinks including cocktails, wine, and of course, beer. It is a little pricier than other venues, however, you are paying for the beautiful views and stunning, modern interiors.

120 00 Nové Město (New Town)

The Ice Pub

The Ice Pub is part of the Karlovy Lazne nightclub. Everything you see in this pub is made of ice, from the walls to the bar, to the glasses that you drink out of. The temperature in the pub stays at a constant -7 degrees Celcius. When you visit this pub you will be supplied with both a warm jacket and gloves. It’s a really great place to go during the day or in the evening while you are partying. A night out in Prague really wouldn’t be complete without visiting this extraordinary bar.
