Only a few things have an impact

Thursday 1/30/20...

I finally sat down and spent some much-needed time on my website. I have a long way to go and a to-do list that matches, but every little bit counts.

The problem is that it's hard to prioritize some activities when I have far more important things going on in my day-to-day.

I spend my morning doing sales and marketing activities that generate leads, I'm having conversations to convert them into appointments, consulting with and doing research for potential clients, vetting vendors, and uncovering additional opportunities in the process.

I also create a lot of content on op of this to fuel the brand and that takes up a good chunk of time each week.

I get some help from Lauren and Leon, but for the most part, I have to do everything. I only have enough time to focus on the things that grow the business and those are client-centric.

The website helps create awareness, generate leads, and educate prospects but on a much smaller and passive scale than what I can do with other activities and therefore falls in line pretty low on the totem pole.

But I was feeling motivated late last night and that newsletter page has really been bugging me for a while, so I decided to sit down and give it a makeover. It feels good to check that off my list but it made me realize that it's the only way I'll ever get tasks like that done - after hours.

I can't even start to count how many times I've added a time slot for website updates on my calendar that gets deleted or pushed back day after day. The reality is, there are just certain activities that get the most traction in generating opportunities and moving my business forward.

Even when I find myself ahead on those activities, there are more just like it that take priority.

When was the last time I combed through my CRM to check in on past conversations, clients, and acquaintances?

I have a follow-up list that's longer than I can count. I stopped chasing people who haven't said yes to a call on the first try. There are just too many conversations to keep up with and I'd rather spend my time with those who are genuinely interested in speaking with me. But when I have free time, you better believe this is where I'm spending it.

It's easy to want to do things in business for the wrong reason, but you need to stay focused on the things that actually move the needle when it's just you or a small team running the business.
