Millions upon millions of professionals aspire to grow their careers each year. It's natural. We're human. We don't want to stand still. We want to learn, grow, and earn more. We want to feel challenged and fulfilled. It's in our DNA. Unfortunately, 15 years of research by my company has proved 93 percent of them won't take their careers to the next level. Here's why...
You're spending too much time "in" your job & not enough time "on" your career.
Last week, I challenged my LinkedIn followers to do a little math by comparing what percentage of the month they spent working in their jobs as compared to working on their career development. Here's the video:
Why bother doing the math?
Our research shows people who spend twenty percent of the time each month on activities that help them develop their network, skills, and reputation are the ones that grow their careers more quickly and successfully. Unfortunately, the research also shows that's only 7 percent of the working population. The remaining 93 percent puts all their time and energy in to their current job, assuming (wrongly) that it will be enough to move their careers forward. When in reality, you need to have a career strategy that's focused on marketing your "business-of-one" on an ongoing basis to ensure success. Now, a normal reaction to this information is:
But, I'm already working 40-50 hours a week. How am I supposed to do this?
The answer is to get intentional and focused on making sure the limited time you do have to put towards your career development is time well spent. If you've only got a couple hours, then you better make them count. Which leads to my personal mission for next year...
In 2020, I'm going to teach 1,000,000 LinkedIn users how to grow their careers via their free newsletter platform.
I can't stand watching people fail at growing their careers. Especially, when they think they're doing the right things only to find out they aren't. Here are three career truths you can't afford to ignore in 2020:
- School taught us everything EXCEPT how to build and grow meaningful careers.
- Today, EVERY job is temporary and your situation can change overnight.
- Your professional network is your NET WORTH in your career. In other words, reputation management and positioning yourself as a practitioner (instead of a pontificator!) on LinkedIn, is the secret to ensuring your career stays on track.
If the above makes sense, here's what I invite you to do:
Every Sunday, I'm going to post mini-tutorials here on LinkedIn designed to coach you on best practices for career growth. NOTE: these aren't going to be quick little 2-minute videos. These are going to be in-depth 20-30 minute power classes designed to help you nurture your career with the limited time you have. All you need to do is A) scroll to the top of this post and subscribe to my newsletter here on LinkedIn, and B) watch the free course when I post them. Speaking of which...
