Only 50 Days Until Fall

Only 50 Days Until Fall

You did not misread that title, folks. Autumn is just 50 short days away. Where does the time go? Weren’t we just celebrating Memorial Day??

Autumn is when our thoughts turn to leaf peeping, apple picking (and, of course, cider donuts), college and pro football, and pumpkin-spiced lattes.

For many working on newer construction projects, fall can mean trying to complete as much of the exterior construction as possible ahead of the arrival of winter. Working on a high-rise project is more enjoyable if the skin is up in the dead of winter, especially if you live in the northern part of the U.S.

But what if, each day, your construction environment was a frozen tundra? No matter how many forecasts you looked at, the results were all the same subterranean temperatures, high winds, and snow; oh, and don’t forget to be on the lookout for orcas and polar bears.

No, this is not the prelude for some weird movie like Sharknado; working in these severe conditions is precisely what project manager Martha McGowan had to deal with every day as she oversaw the construction of a new pier in Antarctica for the research vessel Sir David Attenborough.

Martha’s experience gives a new meaning to building in the extreme. We invite you to learn more about her time managing this project for BAM Construction on our podcast Voices of Construction.

In the meantime, no need to put the storm windows up just yet. A lot of August is left to enjoy and store warm memories before winter is here.
