Online Job Applications Hurt Age 40, 50 and 60+ Job Seekers

Online Job Applications Hurt Age 40, 50 and 60+ Job Seekers

Online applications are the lowest odds way to land jobs at any age.

But it hurts your job search even more when you apply on job boards, company career pages, Applicant Tracking Systems, or LinkedIn.

So why do online job applications hurt your search more when you're over 40?

  • Undervalues You As A Potential New Hire: When you apply online, you undervalue the impact your network can add to your performance. One of the big things that makes age 40, 50, and 60+ candidates more valuable to employers (and a big reason you're able can command higher compensation) is your network. Your network can help the company sell products, find additional talent and can help you get advice to solve difficult or new business problems.
  • Employers Expect More: Because you'll be perceived as a more expensive candidate when you're over 40, employers expect more from you than from less expensive (and less experienced) competitors ... because they're less expensive. Applying online makes you an average candidate compared to your competitors and it's one of the most common ways age 40+ job seekers undersell themselves.

But what if you've already tried to network to a job, and it didn't work ... or you just were ghosted when you tried? When that happens, it's usually because you asked the wrong people the wrong questions, tried to network through LinkedIn, or didn't scale your network effectively.

Many job seekers will revert back to online applications when your networking efforts hit brick walls, because you don't know what else to do.

It's not networking that failed. It was the process you used to network that underperformed.

That should be a relief, because it means it wasn't you. It was the job search process that you used that failed. And you can learn how to fix it, so your networking process will provide more and better quality interviews, leading to overcoming job search ageism and finding your next job faster than online applications.
