Courses, Resources and Hot off the Press Cyber Trauma News

We're over half way through May - which has already been a whirlwind after a busy April and the start of spring!

In the spirit of moving forward, we have a jam-packed newsletter with 5 key topics for you.

1. Events

I have been quite busy with some spectacular events taking place over the last few weeks, including an event where I got a Birdseye view of HMS Belfast from the toilets at the top of The Shard, yes really!

There, I was attending an event with All Tech Is Human which saw many leaders, academics, NGOs and policy people there all discussing things about tech and ethics. It was great to see so many faces and people I know from social media too, I had so many conversations about so many topics. All still buzzing around my head!

By the way…There were blinds in the toilets to allow you some privacy but imagine if you didn’t close them!!?

Which brings me to the process of privacy online and a 'did you know'?

2. Training

I recently ran some training around children viewing pornography (you haven’t missed out as there is lots more on this, see below) and had some very interesting chats with the attendees, which is always the way things happen on this topic!

Did you know for example: that many of the sites themselves track

  • who visits
  • for how long
  • and what type of material is viewed?

Some even do their own research on the visitors, which in the academic world is difficult to achieve on topics like sexology and compulsive sexual behaviour and some of this is discussed in my upcoming book.

Many young people when they visit these sites do so in what’s called incognito mode, yet the ISP (the company that provides the internet to your house) will still be able to see the sites visited. The astute young people often hide this by using a VPN.

A what?

A virtual proxy network which is a fancy way to say a disguised internet address.?

As an adult working with children and young people

  • do you know how to ask questions about VPN’s and the way in which young people use the internet?
  • Do you know how to ask questions about any part of technology, gaming, spaces online etc?

Very soon I will have some resources you can buy to get conversations started with young people (they are being printed as this newsletter goes out!!) and there are some more in the making too meaning you can have lots of conversations about all sorts of subjects and yes, that will include conversations about porn.

Are you looking for guidance and tools to approach difficult conversations? Then you won’t want to miss my upcoming courses - one on Porn viewing in Children and the other on Burnout Prevention for Trust, Safety and Cybertrauma Professionals. Sign up below:

3. So what’s been happening in the world of tech, children and my calendar meeting appointments and conversations?

Well, I have been:

  • speaking to organisations across the globe
  • running online events about children’s behaviour online,
  • running events about children who view porn
  • visiting a little village just outside London to educate some therapists
  • Up to Yorkshire to run the Decoding Online Harms event with Sarah and Keynote at it to set the stage as to where we are at. I hope it wasn’t too scary!

Hello to the new subscribers from that event, and I hope the day was full of information for you. As I said on the Online Harms slide when I spoke about it - we have some way to go still, and I hope to take you along the journey with me!

It’s a roller coaster for sure but you will be fine and then you can make a difference too, in the nick of time whilst we wait for the Online Safety Bill.?

Join the conversation by signing up to our newsletter and be one of the first to hear about my latest research, events and resources.

Keep the dialogue going, be an advocate and stay informed - it’s never too late for other colleagues or people to take an active role in this space.

4. New Resources

You’ll be able to order the Tech Talk IT Cards soon, woohoo!

If these are ready before the next newsletter, you’ll receive a quick email to say they are live, so don’t miss it.

Workshop - For those of you who work with Online Harm, Distressing Content, Moderation, Analysts or even Cybercrime, Cybersecurity issues and Instances where you may have had to view Child sexual abuse material (e.g. teachers/Social workers) there is a confidential workshop day running too, where I will help you to take care of yourself and prevent burnout from Cybertrauma:

5. Finally, New Podcasts

My podcast is restarting very soon with 4 seasons already under the belt!

It’s called Cyber Synapse and it's on Spotify, Apple, Anchor and other platforms and also there are some YouTube videos to accompany some of the episodes.

I think that’s it for this month! I have some more news about my new books coming out in June but can’t say anything yet...

I'll share it with you when I can, but for now let's just say I am OVERLY excited about the news!

Warmly,

Cath

P.S. If you’d like to enquire about speaking events or conferences, pop me a message [email protected]

P.P.S And there’s a new book on the horizon too. Well, more like another two to be honest, so I'm busy with my head down sorting those out. I can tell you when I am 'allowed'!?
