No one's finding talent by having a "bit of a look"?. No one.

No one's finding talent by having a "bit of a look". No one.

I was lucky enough yesterday to be (once again) having a conversation with someone about giving a role to a handful of recruiters, and how that's the best way to go.

That if "we're good at what we do" - we'd back ourselves to beat the competition.

That the problem with using multiple recruiters is just a rhetoric recruiters throw up to get their own way.

I tried to suggest that the problem with the "if you're good enough you'll get it done" argument is, imagine if you got the 5 BEST recruiters IN THE WORLD, and gave them all the same brief. They all do AMAZING work, yet still only one of them is going to get paid for their time.

Note: try getting any of the top recruiters in the world (or Australia, or even Brisbane) to fill a vacancy that's out with multiple recruiters, and let me know how you go.

Whilst I DO understand why, if you don't fully understand how agency recruitment works, it can seem like getting loads of people looking is the best, but what you actually achieve is the OPPOSITE of what you're looking for.

If you give a role to a handful of recruiters (even if you tell them they have it 'exclusive', they'll find out), they KNOW they have for example a 1-in-5 chance of getting paid for their work. So ask yourself, if you were heading to work today and you had a 20% chance of getting paid, how hard would you work? If you knew you could put in a REALLY solid days work, and your wages could be paid to one of your colleagues instead of you, how hard would you REALLY work? If this happened to you ONCE, you'd quit your job, instantly (and probably complain to the Fairwork Ombudsman) - yet this is how some companies still expect recruiters to work. Cool huh?

When 5 recruiters have the same role to work on, AT BEST they'll have 'a bit of a look". But in reality, with this much demand for talent, you don't need to be Einstein to imagine that recruiters will work on roles they KNOW they'll get paid for vs ones they MIGHT get paid for.

So you've now got a handful of recruiters having a "bit of a look" - and I don't care how good they are, no one's finding talent by having a "bit of a look". No one.

If you fancy anymore info on the topic, or still need convincing, episode 4 of the 2 Recruiters 1 Mic podcast covers it off in more detail - link below:

Love this Deon! I had a client who emailed myself and several recruiters into the same email, "Hi All, here's the brief, bring me your best!" I had a "bit of a look" and had no one, so left it to the other recruiters. I called the client a fortnight later to see how they were getting on - he said he hadn't heard from a single recruiter. He actually sounded surprised! I'm guessing we all chose to work on the roles we were actually going to get paid for......I tried to explain how such recruitment models don't usually work - he was reluctant to agree.
