Come June 22, the OnePlus 5—a much anticipated premium smartphone—will make its India debut. Touted to be the thinnest ever flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 5 is expected to pack in a 2.35 GHz octa-core processor, a 23-megapixel rear camera and a 4000mAh battery. The invitation-only launch event, to be held in Mumbai, can be attended by purchasing tickets from their India site on June 12.
OnePlus, the young Chinese phone maker, has created a niche for itself in the premium segment by bringing more feature for much less money. In other words, it offers flagship-level performance at mid-range prices. Remember, CNET called out the OnePlus 3 "the best budget Android phone you can buy". In December, India Today termed the OnePlus 3T as 'the best phone in India right now.' OnePlus recently became one of the top three premium smartphone brands in India. Though the OnePlus 5's pricing continues to be in the realm of speculation, all indicatons point towards the Rs 30,000 range. The OnePlus 5 will be pitted against venerable devices such as iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S8. Interestingly, news reports suggest the OnePlus 5 is a blatant copy of the iPhone 7 Plus.
OnePlus is conducting a poll on Weibo where fans get to vote on eight different possible designs for the retail box of the OnePlus 5.
Till date, OnePlus has shared limited information on what to expect inside the box. All eyes will be on the dual camera system that OnePlus has all but confirmed. Through multiple leaks and media reports, we have this rumoured specs list.
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC with 6GB RAM/64GB ROM and 8GB RAM/128GB ROM options
- Adreno 540 GPU
- 23MP dual sensor on the rear camera, f/2.0, phase detection autofocus, LED flash
- 16 MP front camera
- USB Type-C with quick charging ability
- 4,000 mAh battery
- 0-100% charging in 30 minutes
- Android 7.1 Nougat with Oxygen OS
- Fingerprint scanner
India is core to the smartphone maker's global strategy. OnePlus continues to retail its most-recent OnePlus 3T smartphone in India, despite discontinuing it in other markets. Early this year, OnePlus started its first ever Experience Centre off Bangalore's Brigade Road. It allows users to experience and purchase the complete range of OnePlus products. This blended strategy, while continuing with its online-first approach, is an India-specific play.
We recently caught up with OnePlus’ India country manager Vikas Agarwal, for a quick download on the retail experiment and to under the company’s future plans. We shot this selfie interview at the OnePlus Experience Centre.
Can OnePlus 5 match the success of OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T? How much are you willing to pay for the OnePlus 5? Chime in to the conversation by sharing your comments below.
