Oneitis – The job hunting disease that could cost you tens of thousands of dollars.
I know the second you read Oneitis you immediately thought about dating…
Wondering how it has to do anything with the job search.
It goes along perfect.
Its affected me years ago on a job search
And every week I watch it affect others.
Job Hunting requires a lot of work.
A lot of messages, emails, calls, applications, tears, and wine.
Here is what happens.
You apply for a dream job… and get an email back from an internal recruiter at that organization…
It takes 1 week to schedule the initial phone call.
That goes great! They say you are going to be sent to the hiring manager for review.
It takes 1 week to get feedback on your resume… The manager wants to do a phone interview.
It takes another week for the internal recruiter to find time in the manager's calendar to get the phone interview scheduled.
You knock the phone interview out of the park.
The manager does have a few more phone interviews scheduled that last into the following week. You still get the call for the in-person/Zoom interview.
To get all the managers that need to be there together it takes an additional week for all the schedules to get lined up for your interview.
We are now 4-5 weeks into the interview process.
The In-Person Interview/Zoom Interview goes great. You prepared so hard. You think you did great.
The internal recruiter says there is another interview so we have to wait till those are completed.
Because of scheduling all the managers… That interview happened the following week.
You are now 6 weeks into the interview process for your dream job.
(This isn’t counting if there is a 3rd or 4th interview in the process. One of my good friends is on his 7th interview with an organization)
You finally get feedback the following week.
You really did a great job on the interviews and you would be a perfect fit for the team.
But…
They decided to promote someone internally or a really good employee referral ended up edging you out.
It took 7 weeks in the interview process to find out that you were not selected for your dream role.
During that whole time, the Oneitis bug bit you.
You slowed down and stopped applying to companies.
You stopped reaching out to new hiring managers.
You now realize that you have to get the ball rolling again.
Almost starting from Square One.
The time flies and you don’t realize how much time you lost. That happened to me.
But when it takes a good 4-6 weeks on average to start a new job from the initial interview.
Even if you land the next role that you are applying for…
You now looking at an easy 3 months for the whole process where time just got away from you.
I know you are hearing this from a recruiter… Who of course wants you to take the job that I have for you…
But you always have to do what’s best for you and your family.
Don’t let the Oneitis bug bite you.
Keep those Applications Flowing.
Keep reaching out to hiring managers on LinkedIn.
You don’t want to stop your pipeline or your job hunt funnel (I talk about the secret to getting a job faster than anyone else here... check this out) until you have that signed offer in hand.
There are a lot of things that can happen until you get that offer.
And you don’t want to have to start at square one again.

4 年I like this post. I have seen that happen a lot. Crazy to invest so much time and not have other irons in the fire. Great share...
??
4 年Indeed, it works the same way on both sides of the process - in case things don't work out for whatever reason in this scenario, you have to start from scratch and lose all this time that you've invested.

4 年I've never heard of the Oneitis bug but you are right about continuing the job search for candidates and the interviewing in regards to clients until there is a written offer and accepted offer. Don't stop because you think you have it covered. It's not over, till it's over.
