A Deep Dive into Generational Preferences
Television: The Enduring King of Live Sports
Television remains the most-used medium among sports enthusiasts in 2024, with 55% of respondents citing it as their primary channel for consumption. Its dominance is particularly evident during major live events, such as football matches or Olympic broadcasts, where it fosters a collective viewing experience unmatched by digital platforms. This trend is most pronounced among older demographics, for whom television habits are deeply ingrained. However, even within television, usage patterns are changing. Younger viewers are showing signs of fragmentation, complementing their television habits with a growing reliance on streaming and social media platforms.
Streaming Services: A Growing Competitor
Streaming services are gaining ground, with 42% of respondents regularly using platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. Netflix continues to lead with 49% of users across all demographics, but a generational shift is evident. Disney+ is emerging as the platform of choice for Gen Z, capturing 25% of this cohort, followed by Amazon Prime Video with 22%. This younger audience is drawn to Disney+ for its curated, age-specific content, showcasing the importance of tailored programming in capturing specific segments. Sky remains a significant player in sports streaming, buoyed by its exclusive broadcasting rights for Bundesliga matches. However, it faces increasing competition from more diverse streaming offerings, which are reshaping the marketplace.
Social Media: Platform Preferences Reflect Generational Gaps
Social media remains a cornerstone of engagement, but its usage varies significantly across age groups. Gen Z leads the way in regular usage of TikTok (65%), Instagram (74%), and YouTube (75%), with TikTok excelling in creating dynamic, story-driven content. By contrast, the broader population leans toward YouTube (63%), Instagram (58%), and Facebook (50%). Snapchat and TikTok exhibit the largest generational disparities, illustrating the challenge for brands to balance content creation across platforms. Facebook, meanwhile, retains a strong foothold among older users, highlighting its role as a stable network for maintaining connections and sharing information.

Titles like Kicker (25%) and Sport Bild (24%) lead the way, underscoring the enduring value of in-depth analysis and credibility. While their reach may be limited compared to digital formats, their loyal readership remains a key asset, particularly among football fans who value expert commentary and tradition.
